[SOLVED] Gnome not displaying desktop after upgrade MG 1->2

Postby pernel » Jan 14th, '13, 10:37

Upgraded Mageia 1 to Mageia 2. After this in gnome, the desktop is completely empty. All icons are gone. The box is Swedish localized and I have two desktop folders in my home directory: Desktop and Skrivbord. Before upgrade the last (Swedish) was active. The bars on top and down are active and seems normal. How do I direct Gnome to use the correct desktop folder?

Hello,
It looks like you are running gnome3. If you log out and then select gnome classic, then login.
It will all come back again.

Hi and thanks for response. I did what you recommended but it looks the same without any desktop icons. Installed xfce - this shows the desktop contents in the normal way. Maybe I should try uninstall and reinstall gnome?

You may want to use the forum search function for Gnome 3, IIRC with the default config and without any extension it does not allow for desktop shortcuts.

Apart from that, how did you upgrade Mageia 1 -> 2 ?

martinow: I will try the advice in the link
doktor5000: I definitely need to study more about Gnome 3 (and IIRC whatever that acronym means) or decide to drop both kde and Gnome in favour of xfce or lxde.
By the way, I upgraded with this command:
mgaapplet-upgrade-helper --new_distro_version=2

Sorry for the acronym, it means "if i remember correctly" and is commonly used in forums and IRC:

And about the post i mean, i think it's one from the german forum https://forums.mageia.org/de/viewtopic.php?p=9540#p9540
Maybe you want to ask viking60, as he's into GNOME and can probably help you better here...

Thanks for response - after your previous post mentioning "with the default config and without any extension it does not allow for desktop shortcuts." I searhed the web and quickly found this link:
http://joesteiger.com/2011/07/02/enable ... ntu-11-04/
This simple command did what I wanted:
"gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true"
So I got what I wanted after directions from you. Thanks!

Re: Reopened Gnome not displaying desktop after upgrade MG 1

Postby pernel » Jun 23rd, '13, 13:49

I reopened this. After installing Mageia 3 on one box, the possibility to show desktop in Gnome classic is somehow blocked. Using dconf-edit is blocked.
The command "gsettings set org.gnome.desktopbackgrond show-desktop-icons true" results in this response: "failed to commit changes to dconf: The connection is closed"
Any hints on how to enable a normal desktop in gnome classic?

You may want to try Mate viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4867
as you seem to want the classic GNOME desktop.

Solved again! Found out from somewhere that the command above would work only as a normal user. When executed as root I got the message above. Now all is set.
