Install on USB HD:generic kernel ?

Hi everyone,
I installed Mageia 2 on an USB hard drive and it works great. To do that, I used my desktop computer.
Now I can boot the USB hard drive and enjoy Mageia.

I can also boot from the USB hard drive using some other computers (e.g. a second desktop computer or my laptop, not the computer I used for installing Mageia on the USB HD), then the system loads grub, I choose Mageia and get an error message, warning me that the kernel is not adapted to the CPU of the system... For instance when trying to boot MAgeia from my USB HD plugged into my laptop, I get an error message concerning "pae" which does not seem to be supported...
So basically I can only used my usb HD on the desktop used to do the install.

I previously installed Mandriva on an usb HD and it worked great, I could boot Mandriva from the USB HD on every computer.

Now I seem to have to choose a more generic kernel which would be suitable for running on my laptop, on my other desktops...

Has anybody a hint to solve the problem ?

How to install Mageia2 on an external USB hard drive so that the "portable" system can be run on every computer ?

Maybe I could just install some supplementary kernels on my USB HD, which I could then choose when trying to boot the portable system on my laptop or ther desktops...

Thanks for your help
Vincent

What install media did you use?

I've had good luck using the LiveCD and not removing support for unused hardware.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your reply. So I underrstand that you are able to use your portable Mageia on different computers ?

For my install, I used a CD or DVD, I burned the latest Mageia2 ISO (32 bits). As far as I remember, it was not a liveCD though

I probably chose to remove support for unused hardware... big mistake.

Thanks !
Vincent

If you used the install DVD/CD it only installs drivers for the hardware that it detects.

If you use the LiveCD to install it wants to remove support for unused hardware but if you uncheck that box it will boot on any machine the LiveCD would.
