[SOLVED] Testing indication in the desktop

Postby giocitta » Dec 20th, '12, 22:00

I'm a new Mageia user, and wish to thank in advance all the friends who will help me to use it at best. At the moment, my problem is: How to remove the Testing indication that statically stands out in the lower right part of the desktop? Is it possible? Thanks.

Which desktop are you using, and which testing indication are you referring to? Please post a screenshot of what you mean, that'll probably be the easiest way.

Is this the "AMD Testing use only" notice? If so, I'm guessing you have installed the alpha 3 or beta 1 release of Mageia-3. The simple answer is to install Mageia-2, which is the current stable version.

Hi doctor5000,

it was very kind of you answering so quickly. Unfortunately, I was out and only now I'am abel to send you the requested informations.
I installed in my desktop, as martinw guessed, Mageia 3 beta1 KDE: absolutely perfect for my necessities. Only an aesthetic problem: I'm disturbed by, and would like to remove, the "AMD - Testing use only" info standing in the lower right corner of the desktop. Is this possible?
Thanks again.

No, not the simple answer. Use the stable driver would be the simple answer.

Or, the even easier way

As root edit
Code: Select all
/etc/ati/signature

and replace "UNSIGNED" with this next line.

Hi giocitta,

If you are new to Linux, I would not recommend using the beta release. Although it may be quite stable at the point of release, any updates you do will come from cauldron - the developer's sandbox. It is possible that you will accept an update one day and find your system no longer works.

However, if you are familiar with Linux (and just new to Mageia), or are happy to cope with occasional breakages, carry on - the more beta testers we have, the more chance that bugs will be found before the final Mageia 3 release.

Hi pete910,

I followed your suggestions: (1) replaced UNSIGNED with the sequence of numbers and letters you indicated in /etc/ati/signature; (2) updated the system installing the new kernel 3.7.1; (3) changed the links for initrd.img and vmlinuz; (4) reboot, and MAGICALLY the ugly indication "Test Use Only" disappeared. Everything seems to be perfecly working. Perfectly as your suggestions. Many thanks.

Hi martinw,

the second situation you envisaged is the correct one: I'm very happy to cope with occasional breakages. So I'm going on with your marvellous Mageia 3!
Many thanks.
