Hi,
If you are using kde you may only have to unmute sound in kmix without going to the terminal or disabling pulseaudio. Few months ago I was checking out distributions with recent kde and some of them started without sound (I don't remember which one). At first I didn't notice it, because the volume slider was at maximum, but when I clicked the mute/unmute button sound came back immediately. Maybe it is the same with Mageia.
