[SOLVED] unable to use the package manager

PostPosted: Oct 26th, '12, 02:41

Hi all!
I cannot see anything in the package manager. I've got all the basic sources but the manager itself is not working;
Image

As you can see, I hope. everything is grayed out. Everything else is working. I am posting from Mageia and can do everything I want on the internet so it is not a networking problem.
Any suggestion anyone?

It looks to be a problem with your sources.
What does
Code: Select all
urpmq kernel
in a terminal return?

Hi, I have a similar issue, even more so. First off, I'm unfamiliar with this pkg manager gui, I'm accustomed to Synaptic. This is a virgin installation, right off the dvd, but something glitched. The media list is EMPTY, and I have no idea what (or how) to add to it. This is in both gui and confirmed using the command:
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-media active

which comes back with no result. Before I provide the kernel* list, I'm just wondering how (or if) that's germaine to this?

My www connection is wireless-only for this desktop, via a usb 802.11n nic, and there may have been a bobble in the connection during install? That's the only thing I can think of for the glitch, I verified the iso when I burned it...

Nice wiki!
Unfortunately it doesn't solve my problem. First of all, in my case anyway, I do have sources enabled, I can add or remove some. I can also look for updates. It is only the install manager that doesn't work properly. For instance I opened it and I was not able to close it ( either by pressing the (x) button at the upper right corner with the left button on the mouse or right-clicking on the icon on the tray and choosing close.
I thought I could close it by rebooting but after doing so I was asked for my administrator password and the install manager reopened without me wanting to do so and I still cannot close it.
I also tried a suggestion from the wiki with the following result;
Code: Select all
[rejean@localhost ~]$ drakrpm-edit-media --expert
Gtk-Message **: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" at /usr/lib/libDrakX/mygtk2.pm line 20.
getting exclusive lock on urpmi
wrote config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg]
unlocking urpmi database
[rejean@localhost ~]$

so my problem is different than Xhermin. I'll try rebooting and not allowing the install package manager and see what I can do from the "urpmi" wiki. But again this won't solve my gui package manager.
P.S. I rebooted and refused to open the package manager and it's not there for now. As said I'll see later if I can do something with "urpmi".

I have at least 29 medium up-to-date and 14 new packages were installed;
Code: Select all
To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed:
  Package                        Version      Release       Arch
(medium "Mageia 2 - x86_64 DVD")
  lib64twolame0                  0.3.13       1.mga2        x86_64
(medium "Tainted Release")
  cdrdao                         1.2.3        6.mga2.taint> x86_64
  gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly     0.10.19      2.mga2.taint> x86_64
  lib64dca0                      0.0.5        3.mga1        x86_64
  lib64dvdcss2                   1.2.12       1.mga2.taint> x86_64
  lib64faad2                     2.7          4.mga2.taint> x86_64
  lib64freetype6                 2.4.9        1.mga2.taint> x86_64
  lib64lame0                     3.99.5       1.mga2.taint> x86_64
  lib64quicktime0                1.2.3        3.mga2.taint> x86_64
  lib64rtmp0                     2.4          0.git2011122> x86_64
  lib64x264_120                  0.120        0.20120306.s> x86_64
  lib64xvid4                     1.3.1        2.mga1        x86_64
  mencoder                       1.0          1.rc4.0.r345> x86_64
  mplayer                        1.0          1.rc4.0.r345> x86_64
4.4MB of additional disk space will be used.
5.3MB of packages will be retrieved.
Proceed with the installation of the 14 packages? (Y/n) y

and look at that;

so one of the installed file solved the problem. Yahoo!
if Xhermin wants to keep using this thread he or she is more than welcome but as fas as I am concerned my problem is solved.

Please mark the topic as SOLVED by editing the title of your origanal post.
The problem Xhermin had was that he had no sources configured which doktor5000 answered.

I should add for those who might experience the same problem that the command that probably triggered the installation of the 14 files I think is; "urpmi --auto-update ".

The picture in the wiki (which features a screen cap of a filled media list) led me to believe that I was supposed to have that already when I didn't, leading me to believe the accompanying text was of no use, so I didn't read it very carefully (the first time). As I've said elsewhere, I'm accustomed to Debian-based distros, Synaptic, and apt-get, the urpm* commands are utterly foreign to me. And one manages the repos Synaptic uses from within Synaptic (or edits the sources file directly) -- I was looking for that capability in rpmdrake and not finding it, not knowing I had to go via the Control Panel (!) to do that! Failing that, a text list of the url's to manually edit the sources file with would have worked for me too. Glad the automated system worked, once I learned what it actually was.

Coming from Debian doesn't mean you don't need to relearn things ;) And it seems you didn't take a look at the menu.
In rpmdrake -> Options -> Media manager

You can always edit /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg manually, if you really want that. For that you may have to read some
man-pages and documentation, see above.
