[OBSOLETE] iphone 5: transferring photos and mp3

What I want to do:

  • copy photos from the phone to the computer
  • copy mp3s to the phone and listen to them.

According to the Mageia forums and libimobiledevice.org, it is in principle possible to connect a non-jailbroken iphone 5 to a Mageia computer via USB. According to the link above I get "filesystem access" on iOS 6 even without ifuse, but with either gvfs or kio_afc.

However, it also says that "Camera/Photo Synchronization" don't work, but "PTP photo access works". Good enough, right?

I also says "Music/Video Synchronization" works with iOS 4.35 only. I read about syncing via Amarok, Rhythmbox etc., which seems a more convenient way of copying music. That's nice, but not necessary. Do I need to update the phone's music player's database in any way to actually play the mp3s that I simply copied there?

Does anyone have practical experience with this?

I'm clueless about anything Apple and don't have an iphone yet. I'll appreciate any further comments and caveats, e.g. about the likelihood of iOS updates disabling libimobiledevice.

Do you have an wifi connection at home?

Have no idea about iPhone 5.
I have though an iPod touch 4 (basically an iPhone without the phone part) and for transferring pictures is enough to plug it in and import the collection or pick separate pictures with DigiKam or Gwenview and maybe others.

Adding music to your collection is also possible with GtkPod for example although some work was involved last time I remember.
However I quit using any cable connection since there are a (overwhelming) number of media players (free or paid) on App Store that can manage and transfer any type of media from and to your computer using wifi.

Libimobiledevice gives you the chance to do some other cool stuff on your device but for most you need to have it jailbroken (not yet possible for iPhone 5).

My info could be outdated though...

Yes, there's wifi. The phone isn't for me, I'm just gonna support it. So I want it as vanilla and minimal as possible. Linux only, no itunes, no app store. The user wants only the functionality I mentioned above; if anything doesn't work as according to the manual, I'd like to send them to the store, receipt in hand. The only reason I'm considering an iphone is the relatively good camera. Talk about killer feature.

Re: gtkpod. gtkpod.org says "iphone: Up to and including the 3rd generation if one song is added with itunes first". So nope.

That might actually sway me. Thank you! Is there such a free app that you have used for photos and mp3s with Linux (Mageia 2?)? How does that work on the computer side – can you mount a share?
