Samsung 7 Chronos & Mageia 2 64 bit

Postby galba » Oct 7th, '12, 18:27

I have a Samsung 7 Chronos notebook, and I have installed Mageia 2 64 bit as a bual boot with Win 7 64 bit, recently.
I'm very happy, all the hardware runs well basically out of the box with Mageia 2, even wifi and web cam and all the audio.

The one thing what really bothers me is, some service is turning the hard drive on and off every few seconds,
and that is cauing the system to slow down almost to 0, and even the cursor stops moving.
I've assumed that it's caused by the pover management and I've turned all off in the System Settings - Power Management,
but no change. There was no change even when I setted "Act like a PC running on AC Power".

I have monitored the upower deamon, upower -monitor-detail not it seems that this daemon does nothing, but monitoring the battery and HW. I will try to uninstall this upower deamon, will see what will happen, but will wait at least for a few days for a reply.

I would not mind, if the hard drive is constantly on and system runs on full power, but this hard drive on & off every 5-10 second will kill the hard drive for sure.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Gab

P.s.: There is a small issue with the touchpad driver, but it does not bother me at all, I'm using a mouse.

In a terminal as root, query the settings of the drive (in my example "sda") via hdparm and look for "Advanced power management level"
Code: Select all
hdparm -I /dev/sda

To which value is it currently set?

Galba, very welcome to the Mageia forum!!!! :)

As you might have seen, your latest message has been modified.
We love to see terminal-output in between [CODE]-tags, as shown in following screen-cast:
http://ftp.mandrivauser.de/rpm/rpm/extr ... e_tags.ogv
Besides, i have moved the topic over from "General discussions about Mageia".

Anyhow, feel welcome and have magical times around!!! ;)

Please try to change as described f.ex. in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... ost2910003
If that's the issue, you may want to read more about it at http://ubuntudemon.wordpress.com/2007/1 ... iller-bug/ and https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/K ... nder_Linux

You might also try to disable the standby/idle mode via
Code: Select all
hdparm -S 0 /dev/sda

Note that is a capital S !!! A lowercase s would be rather dangerous, according to the hdparm manpage.

You might also try the -Z option:
man hdparm wrote: -Z Disable the automatic power-saving function of certain Seagate drives (ST3xxx models?), to prevent them
from idling/spinning-down at inconvenient times.

More options are explained, as noted above, in the man page of hdparm ;)

Tis is what I have done, but so far it seem, the hard rive is in and off every 5 seconds.
Will try ot rebood it, just wondering if there is any difference after.

By the way, this hard drive on and off is happening only when the power supply is un- plugged.

[root@localhost gab]# hdparm -S 0 /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
setting standby to 0 (off)
[root@localhost gab]#

Well, then i'd suggest reporting it as a bug: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly
