This is the first time that a distro does not make my sound work.

I am using MAGEIA 1 KDE

I will probably get shot down here, but I have to disable Pulse Audio in MCC. Then I start alsamixer in a konsole. alsmixer has a control named '5.1' and the extreme right hand side of the mixer. This control has to be muted, not just volume to 00, but actually muted. After that my sound works.
If you need the instructions explained in a more step like fashion I will be pleased to write the steps out for you or anyone who is struggling with this.
This is not a Mageia bug as I got the same thing in Mandriva and many more have the same problem with many distros.

thank you for your reply. i had to expand the screen to see the 5.1 control but it is stuck at 00. how do i increase the volume or the value?

I noticed that the master volume was at 00 and I was able to increase it!

I opened alsamixer via konsole (terminal) and then increased the volume of the master. i was not able to edit the 5.1 control.

Now I have sound! Yahoo!

Glad you have sound stephengo. To mute 5.1 or any of the channels with alsamixer just move the cursor to the channel you wish to mute and press the secret key 'm'. Likewise to unmute the channel you press the secret key again.
I'm joking about the key being secret it's just a bit obvious when you know what it is.

I had some issues with that too, after install of Mageia 1 stable i had no sound but after running alsamixer in a konsole audio was working fine.
Some of the levels was disabled, strange thing.
