I would like to make some alterations to a widget I've found called "countdown timer"
it almost meets my needs but not enough.
so is there a resource that can teach me how to make alterations to it?
it is open source I assume?

Yes, it is. You probably want to look at something like http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tut ... lasmoids_4
You will need to find out the files for this plasmoid, and then get and modify the source code and recompile it, as most plasmoids are binaries.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!
