Keylogger

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

Keylogger

Postby gbvoris » Jul 4th, '12, 23:17

Are there any keyloggers which are fairly easy to setup/use for this distro? I want to allow children access to the internet through this computer; but I need to be able to verify to the state that they haven't been up to no good!
I have plenlty of space (87 gig avail) and it isn't esential that it remain totally invisable, although it would be nice if was at least "out of the way" and not accessabile to them.

there are tools such as usb recorders that hackers use to record your keystrokes,
but as much of what is done on the interface is point and click then, you would need to record
and playback there mouse as well.

personaly I dont like this idea of big brother, even with childern, you need to trust them and install
a sence of being trusted not to do bad, with an element of supervision.

of course this is not the same as filtering bad sites so they dont stumble onto something that in there eyes,
either needs some difficalt explanation or effects there gradualy learning about the world.

the way this would be aproached in the corperate world where its a different problem, most are adults (or should behave like adults at least)
and could potentialy offend a collegue or be seen us unprofessional , by clients , cutomers and othere employees.

Therefore a similar approach can be taken with children, by making sure that there computers have to go through a transparent proxy
and that there access to root is prohibited, and the transparent proxy (such as the comunity endian firewall) filters what they can visit and recrds what they visit.
It also virus scans all downloads.
You can also install and run auditd, which audits all system calls.

this is effectivly a keylogger at the kernel level and records every action the kernel takes.

its not so easy to review and takes lots of space depending upon what mode you switch on, but its party of C2 security requirments.

Once they are aware that this is in place, they may also act responcibly, knowing that there access can be reviewed and there are concequenses to there
bad use.

which is the same as the keylogger does.

Way off topic, but you brought it up. Trust has nothing to do with it anymore than a parent would trust children to play in the street or drive a car without a license. As a father of 5 (2 adopted special needs (abuse, neglect, mental, emotional, physical problems) I think ideal abstractions of what others "need" to do are not typically useful.

On topic, if you run Gnome maybe http://projects.gnome.org/nanny/ will help.

http://projects.gnome.org/nanny/ looks like it might do what I need, now if I could just figure out how to install it!
And, wintpe, I understand your point of view and pretty much follow it with my children. The problem I have is with foster children, they can rarely be trusted.
Blocking with Nanny would be a minimal, a record of every keystroke would let me KNOW what they've been up to and allow me to tell DHS that they have or havenot been on any "bad" sites.

Thanks gbvoris for your rounded and polite response.

as you could see i gave more that one reply, and offered several solutions.

a keylogger will not record point and click in general, so its easy for a troubled character to manipulate a google search to come up with what they want to point at.

obviously it will help with stuff like IRC and messenger one of the primary areas you need to be concerned with.

but you really need a transparent proxy with logging to see the sites they visit, if its graphic images that you are more concerned with.

I use endian firewall as i already stated , it has an excellent gui, but you will need another machine for it, although a second hand older PC should suffice for your needs.

I use one of the atom first gen miniitx, but i wanted brand new.

an athlon 1800, or a celeron , one of those packard bell systems, that resides in the recycled computers should be powerful enough.

Many operating system including "parental control" function and some browsers have this function too. It can filter pron sites. If you need to see what he do on the computer, you can try anykeylogger, I used it for half year, it works good.

Parental control is something different than a keylogger. URL filtering or a proxy is something different than a keylogger.

If you want to filter domains I recommend you set up your router with OpenDNS and blacklist the sites you don't want kids to see.

Also enable adblock plus in Firefox.

There's also parental control in Mageia for added security.

I'd take this approach instead of keyloggers. This way they won't even know those "bad" sites exist instead of accessing them and later receiving a punishment.

Maybe you can try OpenDNS which can help you misspelling correction, phishing protection, domain blocking and content filtering, etc.

How does OpenDNS by itself help with those points you listed, what's the relation?

Sorry I didn't use all of function by myself, you may need to have a look at its official website: http://www.opendns.com/
