[SOLVED] How to take screen shot of KDE log-in screen?

Postby yankee495 » Jun 21st, '12, 21:57

I've never wanted or needed to...I googled it and can't find it.

I can take a shot of the desktop but do I have to set it to run the screen shot program before login?

Sorry, I didn't say KDE, KDM actually.

After an hour nap and another hour I found out how to do this. Enjoy

From MCC Install software:

Install x11-server-xephyr

Install ksnapshot

Goto /usr/share/config/kdm/ and open the file kdmrc as root.

Find:

[Xdmcp]
Enable=false

and change to Enable=true & save it.

Log out and back in.

Open a console and do one of the following commands :

Xephyr :1 -query localhost -screen 800x480
Xephyr :1 -query localhost -screen 800x600
Xephyr :1 -query localhost -screen 1600x1200
Xephyr :1 -query localhost -screen 1920x1080
Xephyr :1 -query localhost -screen 1920x1200

The screen size can be changed to like:

Xephyr :1 -query localhost -screen 1600x900 which is how I got the following screen shot. Use Ksnapshot and take your best shot!

Not only can you take a screen shot, but you can select XFCE (If you have it installed) and log into it in a window! Also, you can make a desktop shortcut to an application and put the command in it.

Themes are stored in /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes in case you want to test some out. Uncompress them and put them there.

I'll be playing with this and remote login for days (To help Paul). This is solved now.

Sleep brings wonders, by-the-way, is that an Ossigeno-theme you are using, looks nifty. ;)

Yes, I darkened it...but that is what it was (is). I really like that theme. Very good! Plain, but plain ole beautiful, and Tux got to ham it up a bit. I was going to post a smaller one...got the wrong file.

But this is great. I can play with log-in themes without logging out. I'm no artist but with the right 3D software you don't have to be. Years ago, while mowing the yard, it was so hot...every time I went to rest I practiced my 3D and got pretty good at chrome and glass both of which are not easy to do.

Of all things I made 3D models of hand cuffs and a beer mug...Yep...sure did...chrome & glass...

I still haven't figured out Blender for squat...but plan to. Would like to do a whole Mageia theme, from scratch, 3D, all shiny and new looking.

After installing Mageia 4 I am going through it checking to see what still works. I know, things should just work but an update killed my xephyr one time, I guess, because after trying to fix it and giving up, it seems an update fixed it.

Anyway, this still works great on Mageia 4 if you are trying to design a login theme.
