trouble with external harddrive

I just did a fresh install of Mageia 2 KDE 64 bit....left Ubuntu....

I have all of my files on 2 different external harddrives and Mageia is giving me some trouble.

1) The first drive is recognized in "removable devices" in "System Settings" but will not mount. I've clicked the options for it to automount and saved it with no luck.

2) The second drive will automount as soon as I plug it in but I get an error message in Dolphin that it "could not enter folder /media/Documents (which is the drive name). It tells me how much free space I have though. This drive mounted on Windows 7 with ext2read.

Not sure what to do.....I always feel nervous when I only have 1 copy of my family pics, music, documents etc etc.

Any suggestions for a noob?

Shawn

<EDIT: I reread this and realized that I put the wrong information with the wrong HD>

I left Ubuntu for Mageia 1 a few months ago and this didn't happen...and then I went back to Ubuntu while Mageia 2 was being developed....both times there was not an issue.....not sure what changed....

After plugging in the drive enter the command dmesg in a terminal and post the entries at the end concerning your drive(s)

Then give the command
Code: Select all
tail -n 20 /var/log/syslog
and see if that has any additional information.
(you will need to be root user to read that log.)

It would be interesting to note what filesystem was used when those drives were formatted. Also, what happens if you boot from a live cd, like Knoppix, and plug in the drives? Do they automount there, same results, access? Another thing is to try harddrake and determine an appropriate mountpoint to mount the drive.

I will do as you ask when I get home later... for now....the drives were formatted etx4 in Ubuntu...don't remember if I did it in 11:10 or 12:04 if that matters.

I don't have a live CD of Mageia burned to boot from....I do have an old Ubuntu one....which I'll try...

Thanks guys

I also just booted from a live CD of Ubuntu 12:04....both disks mountd but I did not have permission to view the files.

So is it safe to assume that this is a permissions issue and not a mount point issue?

Please show the output of
Code: Select all
mount
when the disks are mounted and output from
Code: Select all
ls -la /media
(or otherwise from the directory where the mountpoints are located)

In general, i think you're hitting viewtopic.php?p=5136#p5136 which is easily fixable.

If they are ext4, then they will have permissions.
Because Ubuntu and Mageia use different UID numbers for the first user there is a good chance your user does not have permission to read the drive. You can fix it with
Code: Select all
su
chown -R youruser:youruser /media/mountpoint

Better mention than that this also has to be done if he wants to access those files from Ubuntu again.

"Music" is the exteral HD that will automount but no access.

"Pictures" is the external HD that won't mount at all....and appears to be missing....although it shows up in MCC

Complete noob question...how do I determine the mountpoint?

Re: trouble with external harddrive

The reason I ask is that
Code: Select all
    chown -R user:user /media

immediately fixed the drive that automounted but would not let me see inside... it now works as intended

As for the the other drive "Pictures"....no change....shows up in system settings but will not mount.

Thanks for all the help guys

You already did:
STUMPOFWAR wrote:Mount output:

Code: Select all
[...]
/dev/sdd1 on /media/MUSIC type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,data=ordered)

Also, for the Pictures folder you mentioned, where is that located? And which of the drives from your first post is the one mentioned above, with the MUSIC?

"Pictures" is the label I gave one of the HDs. The other drive I named "music"....Music works now....Pictures doesn't. How do I know where "pictures" is? It is obviously not on the same mountpoint...right? It shows up in system settings but I can't mount it or access it.

Thanks for the response.

Sometime ago i noticed the same issue, it was the mount option user_xattr. Use Option user instead.

I mean this settings dialog in MCC for "local drives"

. You have to chage to expert mode to do this.

Ok...thanks...I made it to that screen..

I have two tabs..... 1 is SDA and it has my main HD...

the other tab says SDD and it says that the partition is empty....which scare the living shit out of me..... The files were all there just this morning. I did nothing but update the files through drag and drop and then eject it.

On Ubuntu...this drive was always handled differently which I never questioned because it still worked.

1) I always had to manually mount it.
2) Ubuntu never put it with the other removable media on the side of the file manager. Ubuntu always put removable media up top of the window, but this drive was always in with the normal folders (AKA Pictures, Music, documents etc). I don't know if that means anything.

I am really friggin worried....all of my children's pictures are on this drive!!!!!

As I am messing around I see two things.

MCC says the HD is empty and does not have a partition nor does it display it's drive label/name.

System Settings ---> Removable devices.....displays the drive label but refuses to mount it

I've noticed that when I attach a USB device.... the first time it recognizes it, the second time it will not.... I either have to log off and log back on, or I have to reboot.... then it will recognize it.... Not sure if that makes a difference or whether it matters in this situation, but it's an option you can try.

Also, if this is a drive will connect often, you might want to consider putting in an entry in your /etc/fstab file for that drive.

It sounds like the MBR is corrupt.
I'd use photorec to try and get the pictures off it then testdisk to try to repair it, both are in the repositories.
If you've got enough disk space you could also use dd to make an image of the drive before working on it.
