kde in Mageia does'nt work

Postby jerome » Jun 12th, '12, 10:04

For me, kde applications do not work, I do'nt know if it comes from mageia or kde but for example, Amarok does not see my daap shares (despite enabling the plugin), vlc (tainted) does not read the streams of French television (free.fr), I can not connect to my jabber or sip accounts...Too much for me !
Of course, it is possible to replace amarok, empathy, etc. ... But this version of Mageia Kde or me is unusable as it is !

For many including me it works pretty well just out of the box.

So unless you explain us a little bit more each problem (with for example error messages and details of what you do to get to the problems) we will not be able to answer more than "it works for me" :)

So, you mean that amarok sees your daap shares ? That you can out of the box connect to a sip or an xmpp account ?
I've got no rerrors, just it does'nt work (no daap shares, endless connecting...) although it works with other gnome (xfce-lxde)-based distros or even one unity based ;-) I just wanted to try one kde-based and I thought Mageia was a good choice, I've been a mandrake user for a long time when Mandrake put Kde on a Red Hat Base... Long time ago...
But I'm glad that it works for you !

You could try opening the applications from a konsole and see what the output is which will help in figuring out what the problem is. So for example, open Konsole and type amarok. You will get some output as to what happens while amarok opens. Then try accessing your DAAP shares, and view the output, see what the happens in amarok while you try to access your shares. This will help in figuring out what the true problem is.... maybe missing packages.... maybe configuration, etc.

Yes, I know that... That's exactly what I do when i've got a problem with an application... But too much is too much... if you just want to know if you can recommend a distribution or not (it's my job) ...
I can't recommend kde-mageia today, sorry !

Actually Mageia isn't really KDE-based, we offer most popular desktop environments (E17,GNOME,KDE,LXDE,XFCE,razor-qt) and even some lean window managers.
And FWIW vlc isn't even the default media player for KDE ...

IMHO your judgement seems pretty rash, but that's just my opinion. Feel free to recommend what works best for your, also one of Mageias core values: https://www.mageia.org/en/about/code-of ... _pragmatic

That's why i speak about kde-mageia,the desktop I used and recommended in Mandriva... not about mageia itself..

IMHO the thread title and the general matter suggests that KDE in Mageia doesn't work, but those are rather special issues. By the way, did you report those as bugs or did you look if those problems have been reported upstream already?

I agree is use magiea because its the most comprehensive kde based distribution, and i would not use anything else.

Not because im a fanboy or anything i work on many distributions, and for me mageia is simply the best by miles.

And thats kde mageia.

As for amorak, i remove it the second i install any linux distribution, its rubbish, and has nothing to do with mageia

Spend some time with it, if you cant be bothered to understand it the refrain from saying anything.

This is a comunity distribution put together by the huge efforts of volenteers, in there own time, for little reward, and it realy grips me to see people
do nothing but complain, comunity means contribute, there is no place for people to dip there tows in, critisise and disappear.
join in, help , you will be very welcome.

I use KDE as my default desktop in Mageia and I do not have any problems with it working the way I need it to work. I do not have a DAAP share, but I do have Samba working and all my computers in my home can access all my shared files. I do not have problems with VLC, Amarok, RhythmBox, nor Clementine (which I prefer). Skype and Pidgin work for me, and always have. So, I would say that this issue is specific to your situation and/or configuration. I would recommend KDE on Mageia. The only reason I use KDE is because it crossed over from Mandrake > Mandriva. I have used KDE back then, and I still use it.

As for helping you, maybe if you provided some error messages/output from konsole, then maybe we can assist you; otherwise, I suggest using another package to accomplish the same thing you are trying to do. That's the beauty of Linux, if one package doesn't work, try another.... you have many options!!

If you manually install pidgin, skipe, etc. ... because you can not use the default applications of mageia-kde ... If you have not shared daap ... Ok .. I was just doing a test on using mageia-kde out of the box ...
P.S. : Forget VLC, this is for french tv streams that use it...

FWIW, to give another opionion:
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?p=18767#p18767 wrote:At Linuxtag exhibition in Berlin, Germany we presented Mageia 2 using the KDE desktop. The treasurer of the KDE project declared our implementation of KDE and the combination of KDE standard theme with Mageia's default as the nicest one he's ever seen. His verdict was based on the fact that Mageia did not change too much of the original KDE. Hopefully he will spread his opinion! :)

i'll give a try in one week to the free issue, since i'll move for a week in France where he's having Free.
Regarding others problems, there's strictly nothing we can do without proper bugs reports.
