Yesterday I installed the x86_64 bit cd into my machine.

Post install I find there is no word processing and other things I would like

Upon request to update the system I am told there is nothing to update.

But when I try to install anything I am told any programme can not be found.

Nor can the install and remove software find the programmes.

I have tried to rpmdrake

getting the following

# rpmdrake
getting lock on urpmi
examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/Core Updates (distrib1)/synthesis.hdlist.cz]
examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/Core 32bit Updates (distrib4)/synthesis.hdlist.cz]
unlocking urpmi database

the terminal stops.

I have tried to look through the wiki and search the forums but came up blank.

I would appreciate knowing what I have missed.

Yes the thread title could have been better and yes it could have been marked [Solved] as you like it but that's no reason to come down on him/her with the BFH (Big Flipping Hammer).

Of course that's just my humble opinion.

When you repeat all day long the same thing to many people you end up with tricks to automate the thing :p

That's exactly what we do here : an image explaining that once the problem is solved we ask users to help kipping this forum clean and square putting [SOLVED] at the beginning of the title.

That way others with the same problem can find their way quickly to the solution (provided the title is helpful too, obviously)
And helpers can concentrate on unsolved subjets.

This post from Isadora is part of the the normal process when users don't put [SOLVED] by themselves (which would be the best for everybody).

The big (or bigger) hammer would be for users who continue to ignore good practice

Yes I understand why isadora uses the image instead of typing it out each time and that he uses it to ask members to mark their threads as Solved but in this case the thread was marked as Solved but not in isadora's preferred format so I see no reason for his post in that format.

I see that you understand my intention was to keep the forum friendly to new comers.

FWIW, over at mandrivauser.de we did both, reminded users to use meaningful thread titles, and mark threads as [SOLVED] or [DONE] or mods just edited the titles and left a note. After a while users got accustomed to it and educated novice users about that, so that's kind of a self-governance now, and users do it by themselves without needing a notice

BTW: adjusted the thread title to something more meaningful.

Alopogies to all for causing the flaming war which resulted from my second post resultng from my second post.

I fail to see the difference in meaning in having the word solved/ resolved in the heading. And adding thanks was simply trying to be polite.

The heading I used was a simply statement of fact, because I could not think of the right word. And I am offended that people believed it necessary to change it.

Perhaps their time could have been better spent building, and placing, a specific HOW TO in the Wiki. (under that heading) I spent some hours looking for it.

After causing this flaming war I reckon I'll probably, with regret, look for my assistance elsewhere.

I remain grateful, to Ken-Bergen and hope I have not offended him.

Actually you seem to have misunderstood this, there was no flame war, not at all. For the thread title, it should be meaningful and clear,
and adding [SOLVED] improves the overall clarity of the forum, so users looking for a solution can easily filter out threads which might contain a solution that they're looking for.

For the original title (which i've changed by the way) this had actually a similar meaning as "Help, i've got a problem" or something like that, which doesn't give any information what problem or what issue the thread is really about for people using forum search function, browsing forums or using search engines. As this is a support forum, for the most part people come here if they have problems, so this essentially means the title had no real informational value about the content, which is quite bad as most people search for thread titles. Now get what i mean?

Also Ken-Bergen stepped in for your defense, and his reply was more directed at isadora in defense for you, as you can read further on. So you didn't offend anyone, and your problem is solved, no?

For the documentation, feel free to give us some pointers what you've searched for so we can maybe adjust documentation.

Unfortunately there are some predefined terms like software management and repositories, as that's what it is.
We can't really guess under what words a user is expecting to find that, until such user gives us some feedback, no?

I don't think anyone was offended and there was no flame war.

It was simply a discussion on how best to make a new member feel welcome.

I do hope you stay and ask questions when the need arises and give help to others if/when you can.
After all that's what a community is, members helping each other.

we need to improve the way we operate this forum because we all mean to make it a nice place to talk about Mageia and a welcoming place for users searching for help
