Help connecting to network scanner

I am on Mageia 2 x86_64. I have a Epson NX420 all-in-one printer. Network printing is working great. I would like to network scan from it also (as I already do from my mac). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to connect to it. I have tried xsane, when I open xsane, I get the following message:

no devices available


When I try the "Setup Scanner" utility in the Mageia control center, I get this:

Code: Select all

There are no scanners found which are available on your system.


Is there a tool that I should use to attempt to connect to a network scanner. I would prefer a gui tool, but if that doesn't exist, I will try whatever you suggest.

Use your Mageia Control Centre Hardware>Scanners to enable sharing on the computer hosting the scanner, and to enable sharing from client computers.

Drop your firewall to ensure it does not interfere with the detection.
Once remote scanners are defined any of the usual scanner applications should pick up the new scanner.

My firewall is dropped (already was before). I don't know what you mean by "enable sharing on the computer hosting the scanner." No computer is hosting the scanner, it is simply a network scanner connected to our router wirelessly. I tried entering it's ip into the "Use Scanners on host" option, but this hasn't changed anything.

If ive understood you correctly you dont have the printer physicaly connected to you mageia computer.

And your printing using a lpr print.

If ive got it wrong and you have connected it usb then i would suggest downloading the scanner driver from epsons linux drivers site, in rpm format and installing it, then it should be detected.

If you trying to use its remote scanning capability from mageia, then i think you will be out of luck, unless epson has produced an equiverlent of the remote scanner util that you install in windows.

I dont know this printer, but my father has the hp eqiverlent to it so im making a few assumptions.

I found with his the remote scanner performance was appauling, and connected it via usb, where it was about ten times faster.

But that was the exprience under windows.

Yes, you understand me correctly. This is a shame if I can't get this to work, because I will not be able to physically connect it to my computer because it is sort of a central scanner, and a lot of people use it. Thanks.

Ok well just because i think you will be out of luck does not mean someones not trying to find a way.

Google is your friend, but we are always on the backfoot with linux and these cheap devices, printer manufactures

Write drivers the cheapest way possible.

If the epson reote scanning uses some kind of standard protocol we stand a chance, without it we dont.

My expirience with epsons usb drivers and there printers in linux is very possitive, but all in ones with remote wireless scanning for budget prices is quite new and i think sane will need to catch up.

But thats just my expirience, i might be out of touch.

You can use a central network attached scanner. Just do a manual set up in the scanner GUI

Where a scanner is directly connected via USB to a computer, then sharing has to be enabled in the host.
Where a scanner is network connected just do a manual setup in the GUI and declare it by its IP address.

Select ScannerSharing>RemoteHosts select IP address of network scanner.

I know this works with HP scanners. I have never tried with Epson.

I have added the ip to Remote Host, but the scanner utility will not find the scanner. I'm not sure what is wrong.

You may have luck with the instructions from the following page. Altrhough it's for Ubuntu I would guess the same packages are needed for the scanner to work in Mageia.

Unfortunately I don't have an epson printer/scanner, so I cannot tell you if it will work. And as you are on a 64bit system you may have to compile one of the packages yourself. (I read that in the linked page)

for those that dont realise this epson tries to build all there windows utils for linux, and its handled by a japanese company avansys i think

anyway the proper utility is availale in rpm format over there , just install it and use it and ignore all that

stuff about remote scanner in MCC, I dont think the epson scanners use it at all.

of course as i dont have this to test i could be wrong and you may need to use it once the util is installed.

however If its the same iscan i have with my epson v330, you just install it and start it.

however its not great for anything but paper sheets, anything else sugest vuescan

but its still needed as it provided the low level driver even if you use vuescan.
