Xguest is always reset on logout so you'll need to create a regular user such as mike which will save settings.

Could you please rephrase the first sentence or explain what you mean?
xguest is a guest account, which normally is used for demonstrations or when you want to offer your computer for use by foreigners or somebody who you don't want to change the settings in your user account, or maybe children, as they tend to play around with everything ;) It's settings and the content of /home/xguest is reset at every logout.
So you should create a normal user account from Mageia control center, and you will always have a root account, if you don't disable/restrict it like f.ex Ubuntu does.

Yes be glad to I know about the guest account now. my fully getting it is the account under that one usually the root but it seems on Mageia its the 2nd guest account and the root is just when you need root functions in that account, at least thats the way the passwords worked on my setup.

again the root password for the 2nd account didnt work so I thought that is the Main or home guest account and there is no root account to log into at start up but only in the 2nd or first if using the root password while in those sessions is that correct or am I still messing up in my view of this

thanks Its not a big deal at this time as im using another flavor as my main and was trying this one as a dry run , at first it was quick but if i use effects it freezes my 10 yr old machine when i upgrade it I'll be back.... I think its the new kernel as in other KDE flavors with older kernels i can use effects , but no big deal by the Mageia 3 comes around maybe I'll have a new machine you can mark this as solved as far as Im concernred

Sorry i don't understand what you mean by 2nd guest account or 2nd account and which accounts you refer to at what point. Could you please rephrase this so we can maybe shed some light on this so you understand it properly?

BTW, what did you use before you came to Mageia?

Unlike PCLOS you are not offered a root log-in in Mageia as it's not recommended - maybe you used to do that in PCLOS?

Did you create a user account during installation?
Did you install from a Live CD - if so did you somehow skip creating a user account on first boot?

If you don't have a user "mike" (or whatever you wish to call yourself) at log-in then:-

Go to MCC --> System --> Users
add a user "mike" complete with a home folder.
Log out - then log in as mike.

Settings will now be saved for "mike".

Hope that helps.
