Let me first say that Mageia 2 has turned out perfectly on all PC's I've tried the 64bit LiveCD with. Everything i've attached to the computer have been identified properly and work great. Including my USB wifi adapters and built in adapters.

The only thing that I haven't been able to get to function is the biometric scanner in my HP dv9000 laptop.

Is there anyway that I can use this device to identify users? (eg. root user authentication) At this point I can't see how this scanner can even be used. I do not use KDE and looking for a way to use this in GNOME3.

I do not have a fingerprint scanner so cannot be of much help, but the Arch Linux Wiki is always a good place to start looking for advice no matter which distro you use.

fprintd, fprint_demo and fprintd-pam are all available in Mageia 2

You can do authentification in login manager and for a console login. But let me tell you that those fingerprint scanners are convenient and fast, but rather unsafe and can be easily tricked, with a simple scanner and a laserprinter.

I completely understand the risks involved but is there no simple way of configuring this feature? I have yet to see anything work thus far.

What do you mean by simple way? Did you read the link to the Arch wiki? Launching one command, editing one file, that's quite simple, no?

Yes. I have installed fprintd, fprint_demo and fprintd-pam, I am able to enroll with a bit of issues.. but it goes through.

After 3 tries I got it. But alas, when I try to log in with it, it does not work. If I put the machine in suspend and try to use my swipe rather then typing my password, the screen does not accept or acknowledge that anything has been swiped.

I can create a new assigned thumb by using user accounts.
This is what I get..

1. Open User Accounts.


2. Clicking on Fingerprint Login asks if I'm sure I want to delete the already saved....


3. Deleting fingerprint brings me to creating a new fingerprint.


4. It then asks me to swipe..


5. First swipe works great!


6. It then tells me that I should be able to log in with my finger.


As you can see the fingerprint reader works inside of GNOME but for some reason when trying to log into the system it no longer functions. If there is something I'm missing here I'd be grateful for any advice. I have edited the /etc/pam.d/login file so it appears as below:

Maybe you also need to fiddle with gdm configuration, but i don't use gnome, but google may help you find something relevant, as fingerprint readers where quite a popular topic when i looked into getting mine at dayjob working (but never did as it's too insecure IMHO)

Wow, i too have a fingerprint scanner, but was wondering how to get it to work. i will try the above posts and report it here. But im in KDE most of the time. gotta get it to work and see.
