Newbie just installed Mageia no audio and flash

Postby johnnybevo » May 5th, '12, 23:09

I just install Mageia ( i am new to linux so please be gentle ).
I have no audio and in firefox flash player is not working tried it on youtube.

this is the message i get when i try to configure the audio.

Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound card (nVidia Corporation|MCP61 High Definition Audio).

Your card currently uses the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver (the default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel")

First step is to define your online repositories
MageiaControlCentre>Software>ConfigureSources>Add a full set of sources

Make sure the 'non-free', 'non-free_updates' sources are ticked as enabled, and if you live in a country unencumbered with software patents (or do not care) enable the 'tainted' and 'tainted_updates' repository too.

Next Go to Software>Install and in the GUI ensure the two drop down boxes in the top left are both set to 'All'
Now in the search box enter flash-player-plugin
Mark the package to be installed and select 'Apply'

That is your flash player installed. Restart Firefox to use it.

For your sound first of all check your volume controls are not turned down or muted.
Second select Menu>Sound>Pulse Audio Volume Control and check they are not turned down or muted there.

There is a newborn wiki which is there to be used. Have a look here https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_management

Thank you very much.
I will try this sometime today.

With respect to your sound problem. It is almost certain that there is nothing seriously wrong. From what you have already told us it is clear your sound card has been detected and a driver installed.
The problem is likely to be either :-
1/ Sound is working but muted as I mentioned in my previous post
2/ If your motherboard has two sound cards it may be trying to use the wrong one.
3/ It may be trying to use the wrong output on your sound card.

To check out all of these possibilities a good place to start is the Pulse Audio Volume Control in Menu>Sound
Pulse Audio provides a volume control for every active sound application. So if you start playing some audio the 'Playback' Tab in Pulse audio should show a moving level bar for that source.
The 'Output' Tab of pulse selects which physical output port the sound is directed to. Check the options available.
The 'Configuration' Tab of Pulse allows you to select which sound card audio is directed to, and the configuration options for the sound card.
It is likely that playing with these options is all you need to do.

Have fun :D
