so I have the firewire card recognized by the os

I cannot get connected to the camera on the firewire port
this is my /etc/udev/rules.d/z95_firewire.rules
Code: Select all
KERNEL=="dv1394*|video1394*|raw1394*|fw[0-9]*", GROUP=video
Subsystem=="firewire",GROUP="video"

another forum suggested
this rule, which I also put in
/etc/udev/rules.d/raw1394.rules
Code: Select all
KERNEL=="raw1394", GROUP="video"

but no prize

can someone point me in the direction of a solution?

thank you
wsams

Does it help if you do
Code: Select all
modprobe ohci1394
modprobe raw1394

Look at dmesg to see which modules get loaded when you plug in the device.

Also is your user a member of the group 'video'?

Please open a terminal, and as root please run
Code: Select all
tailf /var/log/messages
and then plugin your camera, wait a few secons, and post the resulting output here.
And please use Code-tags for such output.

Thank all for your support, it seems as though I cant get any information from either of the suggestions. I suspect that I am having a hardware issue

I will try the camera on another machine to see if it can be recognized
I will also update my linux box just to make sure

It may take a few days for me to get back to fixing this issue

thanks

I apologise for being slow to respond, its that earning a living thing...
I thought I had a hardware issue with the main board, so I reinstalled the os , tried again

Code: Select all
[root@localhost ~]# dvgrab

Error: no camera exists

I then ran your suggested code: with the camera NOT plugged in

Code: Select all
[root@localhost ~]# modprobe raw1394
[root@localhost ~]# modprobe ohci1394
[root@localhost ~]#

Then I Plugged In the camera

I than ran the following

Code: Select all
dmesg

I then unplugged the cameera
Then I ran the following

Code: Select all
[root@localhost ~]# tailf /var/log/messages

I then plugged in the camera and the following was appended to the /var/log/messages

Code: Select all

At this point I dont know where to go next

This post seems to be close to your problem

Note Comment #8
(In Mageia the module ohci1394 is an alias for firewire-ohci )

It may be a problem with the module in the kernel. I suggest trying a Mageia 2 Beta 3 Live CD to see if a newer kernel could help.

@wsams, pls open this in your browser and do likewise with all the code snippets in your post: ftp://ftp.mandrivauser.de/rpm/rpm/extra ... e_tags.ogv

Awesome, thumbs up for wobo :)
But maybe you should cut out that german dialog box at the end ;)

lets see, 1 reply made a suggestion to fix the problem, 3 replies addressed a lack of knowledge on my part on how to post when using code snippets ( must be serious)

I am grateful for all help, as I do not consider myself to be a world renowned expert on linux , the mandrivauser demo on the use of code tags helped me to understand how to employ them in a post . I will use them in future posts

I will try the newer kernel in the beta edition of Mageia as I do not want to go back to ubuntu

thank you all

By my count 3 replies have made suggestions about your problem: you haven't posted the results of two - except to say you couldn't get any information from the results of them. Try posting those results so that people can see what they are and then try and help you more: using the code tags makes a post much more readable - and this not a linux thing - it applies just as much to windows and Macs. As a wild guess I would try looking at any info you can find on the options for firewire_ohci
