I recently updated my system ( Mageia 1 ) and okular ( pdf viewer ) stopped working
so I un-installed and tried to reinstall the old version but was unable
tried to reinstall new version still no joy

now using xpdf instead
but I thought it worth noting

Okular works fine here, no issues at all. Your Mageia 1 system, was that a clean install or an upgrade from Mandriva 2010.2?
Please also show the output from okular in a terminal. Also did you mean you were unable to install the old version or it did run?

just downloaded again Okular 4.6.5 and installed
this is the desktop error message when I try to open it

my system is a clean install of Mageia 1

if I try to open it from the terminal I get the same error message
if I su into root and do the same I get

unable to install the older version at all

Why are you trying to run okular as root? This won't work as there's no dbus session (as the output aslo tells you) depending on how you get root.
Try again as normal user in a terminal. Also please show the output of

I know this thread is sort of old, but I thought this was worth mentioning. I had this problem and this fixed it:
