As this was not posted in Cauldron subforum, i've assumed it's Mageia 1.

It works here on Cauldron but as the doktor said.

I think i found the reason, mandriva-seed needs hal-deamon running.

& what would make that happen?

I suppose I'm just trying to make a point now
the ability to do a live usb with a gui is one of those things that should work

You have to install package hal and and to start service haldaemon (can be done via MCC --> System --> start&stop services(or what ever it is in english))

Just another point, you know mandriva-seed is not provided by mageia.

I suppose a home grown version would be preferred
if unetbootin worked, that would be fine too

I could have started this on the calderon sub forum
Dok would yell at me either way :D

I get the impression that there will be support for M1 for some time
I like that the release of M2 was postponed so the upstream stuff could be resolved
I've been very pleased with the stability of my long term install of M1 gnome, [since last july]
I moved to M1 kde full time about 3 weeks ago, many more issues adapting to KDE [been active on their forum] than mageia

Well, doesn't unetbootin work only with non-hybrid isos? So, to use unetbootin you'd have to alter the type of isos which would make the simple usage of the 'dd' command impossible.
Pls correct me if I'm wrong here.

here are some help to use mandriva-seed on linux :
Go to the link and do a save link as in firefox or other browser.
Go with KDE explorer (Dolphin) to the download folder.

2 ways :
-> first :
- right click on the mandriva-ssed.sh file and proterties, add execution right.
- double click on it, it will launch the program and you will be ask for root password.

-> second :
- press F4 in the folder
- the console open directly at the right place
- type "sh mandriva-seed.sh"

That's it.

BTW, it would be great to include mandriva-see in the MCC. It would be easier to create USB key to test the new distribution, or to help friend to install their distribution. To be able to create easily a USB stick without having anything to download except iso would be easier and more user friendly

I think it is called halevt
now the seed file opens
& give me an interface
Now I need to get M1 onboard so I can install on my laptop

I've installed hal and mandriva-seed worked, but if halevt leads to the same result it's OK.

If you used "Add & Remove Software" did you set it to All instead of "Packages with GUI"?

Perhaps you don't have a full set of sources only updates because it's in Core-Release.

I don't see
in code tags as a choice
in
/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg
the catageories go from
Core\ Backports\ Testing\ Debug
the next entry is
Nonfree\ Release

Well, "in code tags" means, that you should put the listing of the mentioned file between code tags in your posting

example:
[ code] what ever should displayed [ /code] (but there must not be blanks between the brackets, i did it only for clarifiction)
for windows problems reboot; for linux problems be root
