Slow graphics in Libre Office

Postby zugunder » Feb 18th, '12, 06:54

Hi,

Could someone confirm an annoying thing I have on my system:
When I create a presentation in Impress and insert an image, I can't move it easily. It takes seconds to move the selected image using keyboard buttons and the lag while moving it with the mouse is so big that it's almost useless... The image is small - 25-50KB. I am using Open JDK and the box "Use a Java runtime environment" in Options - LibreOffice - Java is checked (actually, unchecking it doesn't help). LibreOffice 3.4.4, Mageia 1 64bit. I have the same LibreOffice 3.4.4 installed on a Windows XP machine with Oracle Java, and I have never experienced this problem there.
P.S. A strange (for me) thing is also that in "Use a Java runtime environment" I see usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.x86_64/jre, but the "JRE already installed" is identified as Sun Microsystems, Inc - 1.6.0_22 - with accessibility. I have openjdk-1.6.0.0-24.b22.6.1.mga1 installed.

Thank you.

Strange, I have an 7 year old laptop running Mageia 1, and Libreoffice presentation runs snappy even using fairly large images. There must be something other problems, do you have other graphic slowdowns, e.g. playing a game or view pictures? Here is my java settings in Libreoffice, I use Sun java:

You could try installing sun java or check if sun java is on your system:

(MGA control panel, add/remove software, search for "sun java" - scroll down)

Command for changing java environment, in terminal:

/usr/sbin/alternatives --config java

Configure plugin:
/usr/sbin/alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so
For 64 bit:
/usr/sbin/alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so.x86_64

All commands as root (or sudo).

If the problem is not related to java you may check the setup for RAM in LO: open Extra-Options, in the first section (LIbreOffice) check "Memory" (or whatever it is in the English version). You may give some more RAM to the cache for inserted objects/images.

Thank you for your replies!
There are no serious slowdowns here, the regular KDE behavior I guess - for example, when App Launcher Menu is opening I can briefly see a black quadrangle instead of the menu :-). Nothing more serious than that.
What bothers me is actually what I see on the screenshots from Java settings in LO: though the path points to OpenJDK installation the recognized name of the Java Runtime is Sun Microsystems 1.6.0_22... Could it be that LO doesn't recognize OpenJDK?
As far as I can see Sun (Oracle) Java ver.26 which is available in the repos, is dramatically outdated (I'd like to use the plugin in Mozilla too). OpenJDK with IceTea seem to work OK, but this strange behavior of LO is not acceptable.
Of course there is an option of installing Oracle JRE 6_31 or 7_3... Would you recommend any of them? Is there any substantial difference between them?
