I down loaded release 1 and burned the dvd image, amd 64 bit. The install goes to the install menu and no matter what "F" options I pick on the bottom it just goes to a blank screen with a smeary blue line in the left corner of the screen. Even the safe options.

This is a test box that works fine with every other DVD (Mandriva, fedora, open suse, etc.) boot I try, I would really like to get this working as I want to get off of Mandriva (been using it since it was Mandrake ) . Any help would be appreciated.

If Mandriva 2010 installs on your test box, then I would expect Mageia 1 to also. Is the checksum on your DVD good?
You could try booting from the dual arch CD if you do not want to download another entire DVD iso.
When installing from the dual arch CD declare an online ftp source when it asks and it will proceed just like the DVD installation except any package not on the CD is fetched off the internet. Installing this way saves having to do updates after installation.

I am on a very slow dial-up (5KB) and have a friend down load for me. So the arch CD would probably not work well. I guess I will have to keep waiting, maybe the 2 release will work. The MD5 matched the ISO one. Thanks for the reply.

Anyone can write a review and post it on the web. The only way to know if it works for you is to test drive it for yourself.

I just downloaded the lastest version thinking I might try reinstalling to fix my sound issues.
After burning a couple of disks my machine wont boot from it .
It shows 1 line of text them fails after 5 minutes of trying to who knows what.

Try to download the iso image with bittorrent and burn it very slowly (4x).

why would the torrent be different to the direct download?
the slow burn resulted turned out the same result

bittorrent is better because it controls, and if needed repeated the download, the parts of the file. And it's faster.

Download manager (e.g. kget) do the same, but with the direct link.

Both of you are partly wrong. Kget does not check parts of the file, like bittorrent does, but also bittorrent isn't magically faster.

Still are we talking about obtaining iso image/file?
So far I have always downloaded only one file (e.g. iso of liveCD or installation DVD).
And subsequently I checked md5sum.

See your post before, the part that you quoted. Yes we are still talking about downloading a big image file. But you don't seem to
know how bittorrent does this internally, it divides it into many small chunks, calculates a checksum of each, and then just needs
to redownload that small chunk if something goes wrong.
When kget/wget downloads an iso file, and the checksum is bad afterwards, you have to redownload the whole image.
My point was that kget does not exactly the same as bittorrent, so has it's own drawbacks. You wrote it does the same.

I have already edited it.
It was mentioned for resuming downloading.
According my experience gwget is more problematic than kget. Iso file was sometimes incorrect. So I prefer kget.

I did test drive it and it failed. The MD5 check-sum was correct.

I would hardly recommand you to not use DVD or CD if you can avoid them.

USB key are better in a lot of ways :
- They are faster
- They are ecological
- there is no such issue of burning speed or whatever, and if there is an error, you just format it and start again without puting anything to garbage.
- it stay the same after month or years...

How do I make a bootable usb key in Windows to install Mageia on my computer? I see in this forum that is suggested install method, but how do I create the usb key in Windows? I have been trying for over a week with many failed atempts, using Mageia 1 and 2 isos. Thanx, tammerlane.

try to get mandriva-seed software. It should works. (run it as admin in vista / 7)

dd works also, but it's a little bit harder..(you have to find the right command)

pmithrandir: thank you for your reply. I might try the mandriva-seed software you mentioned. The dd is a cli command, which I avoid unless all else fails. In the last week and a half I have made 13 or 14 attempts to install both 1 & 2 (64 bit) without success. All installs failed midway without completing except the last 2. I finally figured out how to get the online installation working. The first online install I opted to update from the online sources during the install. After the reboot I had no internet connection. It did not recognize my laptops lan hardware. No internet so no driver. I got out partedmagic, cleaned up the partitions, and tried one more net install. It seemed to go fine and internet was working. But it was flaky and didn't work right. I haven't had this much trouble getting a distro installed in six or seven years. I had a good experience with Mandriva in the past, and I am looking forward to trying Mageia 2. If I can get it installed. So I was hoping some Mageia wizard would give this Windows user something along the lines of step by step instructions of how to make a Mageia install on a usb key. I tried unetbootin and several other programs without success. Thank you, tammerlane.

First, regrding all issues you seem to get, I would advice you to try a live CD installation. It works perfectly also on USB key. It would help you to discover a little the distribution, but also to see if mageia works fine on your computer.
It's a 32bits release, so maybe there is more drivers on it(64 bits are not so well maintened by manufacturer on some product).

Reagrdin USB key creation, unetbootin doesn't works anymore for mageia / mandriva isos.

on windows, unzip it, and run it as admin. It should detect your usb key. You select your iso by browsing your system, and start the process.
On linux, you have to give the file execution right, and to launch it.

Next step is to reboot your computer, select the right boot drive(USB in our case) and to launch mageia live. Test it, and if you like it, you can either use the install link on your desktop, or restart your computer on USB key and select install in the launch menu.

I hope it will help.

If that works, you can try to do the same process with the 64bits release, and to directly install it on your computer.
Good thing is that it will be faster, and you will not burn a DVD for nothing.
