[SOLVED] video help (again)

I just can't seem to get this right.

I had been able to get my ATI radeon HD6310 working perfectly, then I did a fresh install of Mageia 1 and upgraded to Cauldron using the repos.

I was again able to get it working again:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1782

But the system was always a bit unstabe. I had network connectivity problems and other little things that made the system not quite as smooth as my other Mageia machines.

In another post Doktor5000 asked why I didn't just install Cauldron...I have had problems with huge online upgrades before with Mandriva, so I thought maybe it had to do with the a problem with the 16xx file upgrade.

So I tried to install Cauldron alpha 3, but the install did not include hal. This appears to be a known bug - it prevented me from using urpmi at all.
So I went back to trusty Mageia 1.

I installed and set the graphics card to 'vesa' and booted to kde with no problem. I immediately ran the ati propriatary driver installer from the ati web site.

But I had no OpenGL when I rebooted. So I used XFdrake to install the proprietary driver, and now my video was perfect, and could be controlled by the ATI Catalyst configurator.

But I had no sound over HDMI. I tried forcing the ati driver install, but still have the no sound issue.

I see the HDMI audio and If I play a video I see the VU meters moving. If I switch to the internal audio output with pulseaudio, I can plug headphones into the computer and hear the audio.

I have looked at alsamixer and the default playback device is S.PDIF
I can change that by selecting the ATI SB device, and I get a Master, PCM, mic....channels. But these have no effect on the levels PulseAudio is seeking.

glad to provide more info if it will help!

A side note: It does not. You just have to remove the cd/dvd media in the package media setup. (MCC - Software - configure media (or similar).

I did disable it....not 100% certain I removed it but close.
This is the bug report:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3458

EDIT: OK, mark this as stup...er solved

The problem was an ever so slightly loose HDMI cable.

I am still interested in wobo's take on that bug report.

Nothing changed, removing CD/DVD as media in the software manager works around the "hal not running" issue, at least where urpmi is concerned
