[SOLVED] RecordMyDesktop QT/GTK Fails

PostPosted: Dec 23rd, '11, 01:06

Hi Folks!

Has anyone tried recordMyDesktop in Mageia? It keeps failing whenever I try to open a programme. It exits saying: exit status 11 segmentation fault..!

Any idea?

Thanks

I tried qt-recordmydesktop x86-64 from Mageia 1 repository. It worked fine.

It has worked fine for me to. Maybe try to uninstall and reinstall it. Where exactly did you install it from? Command line or a rpm you downloaded?

Please don't link to RPM search engines for packages we can install directly via the repositories.
Also urpmi --replacepkgs recordmydesktop would be a better solution.

If he had an issue with it before who is to say he wont again. Those rpms are 100% known working ones. Why not link to them when they can be installed just as easy as command line?

Try to reinstall via command line 1st and if that doesn't work use the link I have posted

So you say basically you trust some arbitrary packages from some arbitrary package search engine more than the packages which are offered within your distro's package repositories, bluntly put? That's questionnable at best and regarding resulting support issues i can only advise against such practices. Some of the packages that you find there are not even signed, mostly those of third party repositories. If there are faulty packages or reproducable errors they should be reported and fixed and not workarounded. Cure the cause, not the symptons ;)

its true if the rpm is bad it should be reported and properly fixed. It installed correctly via command line for me on the Mageia repository I am currently using.

But our goal is to help the person here in the most effective way possible and that is to simply download the rpm there, install it. and problem solved. In the future I will download from Mageia repositories, zip them, and upload them to my file-server. My goal is to help as much as possible, I have a strong passion for Mageia Ive never had about any Linux before, I will attempt to do things more your way since you obviously know more than I do

That's a fine goal, please go on with that, we need more people like you.
And it's not about knowing more, just support experience. Far more than 12.000 support posts for Mandriva & Mageia and counting,
somewhere along the way you need to adapt some best practices, otherwise you are just creating more support problems in the long term than you solve ;)

In general, if the installed package would be bad, this can be verified via rpm -V packagename, also package management would throw
out error messages on installation time for bad downloads/signatures/checksums, and i don't think that's the problem here. Maybe
an issue with some sort of 3d desktop effects, or some bad video driver or something the like.

Thank you all;

I installed the GTK version and somehow now it works at times. I mean sometimes it crashes other times it works. Using the QT version, however, is going so slow and not quite responsive..it seems to have a strong character!

Well; I installed it through MCC, i.e. from Mageia's repos.

I also tried to use VLC to screencast, but it has other problems too especially the obsession it has of readjusting it's size to the desktop's!

Ufff! This screencasting thing...

What about the questions we posted, what graphics card/driver is currently used, do you have desktop effects/3d desktop enabled, which desktop environment and what are you actually trying to screencast? What's your system's specs?

Please linuxero next time place output of commands between "code-tags".
That way it's all better readable and avoids unnecessary long lengths for messages.

I have edited your post for you this time, as a service. ;)
