[SOLVED] DVD movies won't play

Postby harkelyn » Feb 28th, '26, 23:06

I'm unable to get either VLC or the Videos a.k.a Totem player, to play any DVD commercial-release movie or television series episodes. The DVD title gets displayed, however the content cannot be accessed for playback. This is on a fully updated Mageia 9 system.

In VLC, I tried disabling hardware-accelerated decoding, because someone posted on this forum in 2022 about DVD movies not playing in Mageia 8, and apparently that was helpful for them. However, disabling hardware-accelerated decoding [in the VLC Preferences menu] did not improve my situation, so now I've restored that to its default Automatic setting.

When I try playing a DVD movie in Videos/Totem it displays the movie or television series title, then this-
"An error occurred - The source seems encrypted and can't be read. Are you trying to play an encrypted DVD without lobdvdcss?"

These are commercially released entertainment DVDs, not encrypted content.

I searched the MCC software manager for any uninstalled package with "lobdvdcss" in the name, did not turn up anything.

These packages are installed-

It's libdvdcss - lib like in library.

And most commercial DVDs are encrypted. Have a look at https://www.videolan.org/developers/libdvdcss.html
And check some previous threads on the topic:

Long story short: you want tainted repos to be enabled, and then install libdvdcss (package name is lib64dvdcss2)
FWIW: those are even recommended in mageiawelcome for DVD playback.

[SOLVED] DVD movies won't play

Well...that's an embarrassing combination of errors on my part. I've checked the control settings for tainted repositories, and made some needed corrections. The problem is solved. Thank you.
