I am interested in trying btrfsBte. At my age, that may sound stupid? Where is a good place to start? BTW, I read that there are a couple of open source Windows drivers for btrfs, and one is included on the installation disk for ReactOS.

Not sure what you mean where is a good place to start. Probably install Mageia and use BTRFS for all filesystems.
