grub2 depends on older messages.

Trying to reinstall Mageia 9. Everything went smoothly up to the final reboot, but Grub2 was not installed. Trying to install Grub2, I get a message:
- Code: Select all
the following package cannot be installed because it depends on packages that are older than the installed ones
I have seen that message before, but in the present context, it just doesn't make any sense.

There are several unclear points. Did you check the ISO before dumping/burning? Were the online medias enabled whilst installation? Which ISO did you use? How do you try to install grub2 afterwards: urpmi or MCC? Are you sure that you have a valid set of repos when trying to install grub2 afterwards? It is possible that urpmi/MCC tries to use the installation medium (DVD, USB, …) instead when you don‘t have repos. That would explain why it tries to install an old grub2.

Thanks. The installation medium was a USB key that I have used many times before. It may no longer be the latest. I am not sure how I installed grub2 afterwards, except that the online repositories were available to access if needed. The first thing to do is check the installer. I use bit-torrent whenever I can, with too many memories of corrupted downloads.

Yes bittorrent is good, especially if as you say you experience download errors.
Wonder if there might have been a download error while using the online repositories.
Did you save the install log?
What happens if you try again, without formatting, reusing /. It should try to update/complement the system.

Whatever was the problem, it has gone away. Mageia 9 installed without any problems, and the Grub2 bootloader double-boots with Windows as it used to. The only remaining problem is a start up issue with the Firestorm viewer, which is clearly not related to this.
