My dual-boot Mga9 refuses to boot because there are too many symlinks in the ESP partition. I understand what is happening, but is there a common fix to try first, maybe canonical links?

What do you mean by too many - maybe too many levels of recursive symlinks ?
An ls -alR on that partition would be helpful probably.
