Please show the output of
Code: Select all
head -n 1 /proc/asound/card*/codec*
and please post this in a Code-block, that's what the Code-Button above the forum editor is for.

Hi,

This is likely just that need to manually choose the "Headphones" port in pavucontrol (or gnome-volume-control or even in KDE's systemsettings->Multimedia->Phonon->Audio Hardware Setup) when you plug in the headphones.

Yes, in case you are wondering, this does suck. It's work in progress to make it do that automatically.

Let me give you some background: Some h/w does this automatically and internally - that is there is only one volume knob to slide to adjust the volume. When you plugin some headphones it is a pure hardware thing that flips over from outputting via speakers to output via the cable you just plugged in (you can get jack sockets from electronics stores that have this changeover built in).

However, some other hardware works differently. It has different volume knobs for Speakers vs. Headphones. This means you can independently control the volume of your speakers and your headphones which is very nice as you tend (generally speaking) to want things quieter on headphones than you do on speakers. Now the problem comes in when using this newer hardware in that it is up to the operating system to use the correct volume control path at the right times. We are told (via the kernel's input API) that a jack insertion has happened and then we have to flip things over to work like the h/w-controlled version (i.e. mute the speakers volume slider knob and unmute the headphones one) to get the same effect.

This is where the problem comes in. The kernel's input API was very patchey. It was very hard to link up the input device with the actual sound jack (different drivers did it differently and used text identifiers that had to be mapped and it was all really, really messy). Thankfully, while in Prague a few weeks ago for the kernel summit and linuxcon Europe, all us audio folks sad down and hashed out what was needed to solve this horrible situation. The bad news is that this requires changes across the stack (kernel, alsa-lib and pulseaudio) but the good news is this work is under way. David Henningsson from Canonical has done a lot of the work at the PulseAudio side and Takashi Iwai is doing the necessary stuff at the ALSA side. With any luck it;ll all be in place fro MGA2, but until then we'll have to keep changing ports manually.

FWIW, this is the bug in question: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=225 (although this one: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212 is likely a duplicate too).

All the best.

I realize this might be a dead thread, but I had the same problem with the headphone jack on my Macbook and fixed it this way (FYI, I use Gnome).
1. I went to download gnome-alsamixer (it is different than the pulseaudio). I ended up downloading the rpm for Mandriva 2011. If this is in the Mageia repos, I couldn't find it.
2. After installing it, go to applications-->Sound and Video-->GNOME ALSAmixer
3. You'll see that the 2nd speaker is turned all the way down. Turn it up and the headphones should be working.

Well, the solution Colin offered doesn't even require installation of any foreign packages ;)

Yea, I know the way I did it wasn't the best option, but Colin's way didn't work for me. I just felt like chiming in on this because I was searching for an answer to this problem for a quite a while. So if it helps the community and makes Mageia a better distro for people, all the better.

Sorry for a stupid question - do you mean that when you plug external speakers you have sound and when you plug headphones into the same jack - you don't?
Have you checked the alsamixer settings (not from KMix GUI, but from the console)?
