Session not restored after boot/reboot

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

Session not restored after boot/reboot

Postby ylyco » Jun 8th, '24, 16:39

Hi there,

I use KDE desktop, and the restore previous session setting does not seem to be working. I have to re-open all my programs. Every time I log in, I get a blank desktop.
The restore previous session radio button is checked in the desktop session settings.
“Start with manually saved session” doesn't work either.

The issue appears this morning after updating the system.

Anyone else is facing this behaviour ?

Thanks for any help.

Hi there, some more information would be helpful. What Mageia release do you use, and which login manager do you use ?

Thank you doktor5000 for your help.

I use Mageia 9 which is up-to-date, and SDDM as login manager.

I can confirm this behaviour.

I'm using an i3 processor with 12GB of memory. Mageia 9 with SDDM as the login manager.

As far as I can tell, it's as it was installed from the iso file with the addition of a few things like Vivaldi Browser and Google Earth. It has been kept regularly up to date.

Previously, and since I first started using Mageia at least as far back as Mageia 5 I have it set to session restore at startup. All of that time it has restored all of the programs that I leave open upon shutdown with the exception of Vivaldi.

That usually consists of Firefox, Midori, Thunderbird, multiple instances of Dolphin, Konsole and Okular.

Vivaldi browser doesn't reopen, but then it never has.

These last couple of days Firefox, Midori and Thunderbird continue to reopen, but none of the KDE programs do.

I can confirm that in "Session Restore", "On last logout" is still the option selected.

Edit I can confirm the same behaviour with my Ryzen 5 laptop.

This is my experience as well in affecting the KDE apps.

I seem to have worked around this by downgrading plasma-workspace, which was updated recently as https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33272.

I'm using dnf here as an example how...

Code: Select all
dnf --showduplicates list plasma-workspace
sudo dnf install plasma-workspace-5.27.10-1.mga9
sudo dnf versionlock exclude plasma-workspace-5.27.10-1.1.mga9

Here I have excluded explicitly the package version 5.27.10-1.1 so automatic updates don't reinstall it but also in the hope a future version will not have the same problem.

Given this is a security update for plasma-workspace i wouldn't recommend downgrading, though it does appear to be affecting other distros like Suse: https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1225774#c5

After the system reboot, the issue is the same...
Did I forget anything ?

note :
the plasma-workspace version installed right now is the 5.27.10-1, and CCM propose me to update to 5.27.10-1.1, so I'm not sure the workaround has run fine...

Sorry to hear my tips did not work for you. I have not done thorough testing, but for me, Konsole was not saving session and now it does with the downgrade of plasma-workspace.

Your output appears to have worked, but my examples assume dnf is your preferred package tool as in https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Using_DNF. dnf is what I am used to, so I only use that.

It may be that something like CCM updated the package again without you realising (eg double-check with rpm -q plasma-workspace), or that your specific system may need all the packages from https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33272 downgraded. Someone else may be able to help you using other Mageia methods, or just wait for an upstream fix. :)

Thank you huggabounce anyway :)
Before and after your workaround, I still can't restore session about Dolphin windows, PDFs, images. Only Firefox and Thunderbird show up correctly.
I didn't try LibreOffice documents for now.

As I'm afraid to breakdown my system, I prefer waiting for a fix upgrade : this issue is not user-friendly but not a blocking one.

I stay in touch here.

You may need to wait for your mirror to sync the newer packages.

Hello ylyco

Like you, I'm waiting for the mirror I'm connected to to synchronise. I don't know if there's any way to tell how often individual mirrors do that.

I guess we'll have to wait patiently.

See https://mirrors.mageia.org/status
Some mirrors are currently lagging far behind.
It pays to select a mirror that seldom fall behind, but it also need to be fast enough seen from your place.
My favourite is umu.se despite some is closer than that one to me.

Not even sure what mirror my machine uses.

The URL in the Control Centre just says "$MIRRORLIST"

I've never been aware of people talking about updates that I haven't had so I'll just be patient.

In Mageia Control Centre I have "Core Updates Testing" ticked in the enabled column on both my laptop and my main machine.

On the main machine, when I ask to edit the core updates testing entry it shows "$MIRRORLIST".

On the laptop doing the same thing shows https://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/mag ... es_testing

I think the former was an upgrade from Mageia , the latter was a fresh install from a live memory stick.

Interestingly, when "morgano" provided a link to the Mageia Mirror Status page, I took a look at that. I'm not sure what some of the descriptions refer to, but there is a row called reference. While I've been watching it, the date/time stamp for cauldron has advanced to 2024-06-11 23:40 while the similar entry for 9 has remained static at 2024-06-11 16:04.

It's been a long day and I'm off to bed. See what tomorrow brings.

Thanks for the input so far.

"$MIRRORLIST" means it automatically selects a geographically close and fast mirror.
You can check the candidates at the top of /var/cache/urpmi/mirrors.cache

Haven't quite made it to bed yet.

I'm sure I can change the mirrors if I have to, but as both machines have been happily updating since I installed them I'm reluctant to do so.

Are we saying that the others who have had this problem are getting the testing update through OK?

This time, I will see what tomorrow (today) brings!

I got the update OK on all three machines. I use the princeton.edu mirror here in the states.

distrib-coffee in France is also a good mirror. Updates fast.
