Plasma Freezes

I am new to Mageia, but have used Ubuntu/Kubuntu for several years. So far I like Mageia quite a bit, but I am having a rather serious problem.

After I have logged on, usually within a few minutes, the panel freezes. I can still work on the current window, but nothing on the panel works: applications, window switcher, nothing. I use ctrl+alt+print screen RSEINUB to reboot.

My video card is a ‎C68 [GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a]. The module is: Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6100 to GeForce 360.

It doesn't seem to matter which programs I am running, although usually chromium and thunderbird at least are open.

I appreciate any help I can get in solving this problem. Please be detailed in giving suggestions/solutions. As I wrote, I've used linux for a while but when I run into problems I learn how much I still have to learn.

Thanks!

Hey there and welcome to Mageia :)

Some informations needed: Is this a fresh Mageia installation, or an upgrade from Mandriva? All updates applied?
Is this a newly created /home partition? Also we'd need to know what driver you're currently using,
please show the output of
Code: Select all
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Are desktop effects (or another 3D desktop like compiz) activated?

Thanks for the response and welcome!

To answer: it is a fresh installation and all updates have been applied. All the partitions were created during the installation. Desktop effects are disabled.

You're using the free Nouveau driver currently, you should switch to the propr. nvidia driver.
To do that, make sure that you have the non-free Repositories (_release and _updates) enabled.
Either as root run drakrpm-edit-media and enable both, or in Mageia Control Center ->
Software Management -> Configure media sources for install and update.

Then as root either run drakx11 or from Mageia Control Center -> Hardware ->
Set up the graphical server and click on Graphics card, the correct "range" of cards
yhould be preselected, and simply answer yes to the question for the proprietary driver.
Reboot, and you should be good to go :)
