Mageia 9 Konqueror problems with FTP

I've always used konqueror to connect to my ftp server to put stuff on my web site and it's always worked beautifully, but with Mageia 9 it will no longer connect. I just get a message saying:

Error: request aborted by user.

Has anyone else seen this and/or knows what might be going on?

Code: Select all
Details of the Request:
URL: error:/?error=1&errText=User cancelled action%0A%23ftp://ftp.blahblah.co.uk/public_html/demos/
Protocol: error
Date and Time: Sunday, 24 September 2023 20:03:18 BST
Additional Information: error
Description:
The request was not completed because it was aborted.

Possible Solutions:
Retry the request.

I can use filezilla to connect and upload, so the server's ok. The install is new install, not an upgrade.

You should probably run konqueror from a terminal and post the respective output here.

Although it could also be that konqueror was partially abandoned, as I've seen mentioned e.g. here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... 175718304/

As an alternative, why not access that FTP server with dolphin?

Thanks, Dok. I didn't know that you could use Dolphin to connect to ftp servers and that does indeed work, so that it's fine for my needs.

It's a shame about konqueror, it was a superior file browser to Dolphin IMHO, I really liked how you could have three or more different locations open in a single tab to drag files between them.

I'm using Konqueror on MGA9 and FTP still works. For my use, it is much better than Dolphin. Why? In Dolphin you can split the screen so you have 2 subwindows, one for your local hard drive, one for the FTP directory. You can drag and drop between subwindows and it works. On the dozen or so websites I maintain there are several directories where I need to put files; main directory with html, cgi-bin with backend programs, directories of forms, data for the cgi programs, etc.

In Konqueror I split the window into 8 subwindows; 4 for directories on the local drive where I keep a copy of the website and 4 FTP windows that correspond to those directories that are on the web server. The FTP subwindows are directly below the subwindows on the local drive. I can then drag and drop, up and down to move files. On Dolphin I would spend a lot of time switching both subwindows to the correct directories.

I suppose you could use tabs and bookmarks in Dolphin to set up something similar but how do you save your tabs? Create a .desktop file for each website? In Konqueror you save the session and when you reload it everything is ready to go.

Workstyle is art. To all the "let's reduce the capabilities and options of our tools so users don't become confused"-- stop, just stop. Find a another paradigm for making users effective and confident, but this time don't get in user's way.

I was agreeing with dbg on the usefulness of konqueror, while lamenting the triumph of simplification over usefullness.
