Best setup for Window Maker

Postby sihir » Jun 11th, '22, 03:50

Hello, mates!

I want to have a fresh Mageia installation (using classic installer) for a laptop, but I don't want to use KDE/GNOME/Xfce. I want it to use Window Maker as the sole destkop.

The question is which packages are essentials for a laptop? I especially want the desktop to have a power manager (to setup laptop behavior when the lid is closed, battery is low, etc.) and GUI-based WiFi manager.

Thank you very much, Mageia community. :D

I have no experience of Window Maker - someone else to fill in here.

But for starters, have you found how to make the selections?
https://doc.mageia.org/installer/8/en/c ... kageGroups
You can deselect large chunks in the main groups, then "Individual package selection" checkbox, and proceed

You will get all of the GUI Mageia configuration tools whichever desktop you choose.
Starting in 1999: Mandrake > Mandriva > Mageia

Thank you for the information. I have installed Mageia without a DE, but IceWM. I think I can start from here. ;)

Thank you. I will check whether the MCC could manage the laptop lid and battery behaviors. :D

That's not something you'll find in MCC, as that is usually provided by the desktop environment.
As you only want to use a window manager, you'd need to condfigure that manually. Have a look at e.g. the man page for logind.conf: https://www.freedesktop.org/software/sy ... .conf.html
You probably want to enable at least HandleLidSwitch=suspend

Also have a look at https://www.reddit.com/r/i3wm/comments/ ... lid_close/ for screen locking.
