very basic question

I found a desired file in Synaptic. I marked it and pressed "apply".
I would like for it to appear as an icon on my Mageia 8 desktop so
I am asking for help as I don't know what to do to put it there.
The mageia manual is of some help but I did not see what I needed.

Mageia has no Synaptic. Mageia is not Ubuntu (so also the package format is incompatible in some way). So a little bit more information would be good.
- where did you download what?
- how did you install?
- what did you install?
- which desktop environment are you using (this matters for the procedure to add a desktop shortcut)?

Under Plasma you could e.g. right-click on desktop -> new -> add shortcut to programm. An icon can be added also.
If you dont't know what to put where, do a right-click on a existing desktop shortcut and have a look at the propertys.

You also did not specify what desktop you are using. Mageia 8 defaults to KDE Plasma but a number of other ones are available.

If you are using KDE, just find the program in the start menu (lower left of the display), then click and drag the icon onto the desktop and it will stay. Not all desktops do this, but KDE doesn.

As already requested: could you please be more precise!
What is "down there"?
What program did you try to install?
Is it a Mageia package or an external one?

Nobody can try to reproduce your issue if you don't give us something to work with...
Thanks!
