[SOLVED] GNOME: No system tray detected

PostPosted: Jan 2nd, '22, 16:11

After an installation of Mageia 8 Live GNOME and upgrade to Cauldron I get an error dialog which pops up after each login.

HPLIP Status Service

No system tray detected on this system.

Unable to start, exiting.

OK

:?:

How can I solve this?

Do you have hplip-gui installed? It should provide /etc/xdg/autostart/hplip-systray.desktop and /usr/bin/hp-systray

According a bugreport also the installation of "gnome-shell-extension-topicons" might help:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23795

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24302

You get also many results if you search for"HPLIP Status Service No system tray detected on this system." on internet. So it is quite common. Did you already try any of this tips?

Both are installed.

Hm, these solutions just talk about removing the startup file hplip-systray.desktop.
I am not sure if I should delete it.

Did you read the bugreport and made sure that "TopIcons Plus" from ""gnome-shell-extension-topicons" is enabled? You can find this setting under "Extensions". Works fine here in VirtualBox installation after enabling it.

I have started the Extensions dialog box.

I see a different image.

TopIcons Plus shows an error.
This extension is incompatible with the current GNOME version.

Do you have "gnome-tweaks" and "gnome-shell-extension-topicons" according to the bugreport installed?
And as you are using cauldron, you should be aware that it is possible that some stuff is not compatible. You can report this as a new bug.

When you create the bugreport you can mention, that the developement of gnome-shell-extension-topicons https://github.com/phocean/TopIcons-plus stopped and the successor is gnome-shell-extension-appindicator https://github.com/ubuntu/gnome-shell-extension-appindicator. It should be replaced in cauldron/Mageia 9.

In the meantime you can install the Gnome extension yourself. Worked here on a Gnome VirtualBox updated to cauldron.

After adding appindicator the error dialog is not there any more after a restart. The HP icon is now shown on the top right system tray.

Code: Select all
 sudo urpme gnome-shell-extension-topicons
