Mageia 8 : missing most plasma icons

Postby xi » Dec 30th, '21, 20:51

Hi,

I am using Mageia 8 (up to date) + plasma on an old Dell D620 (x86) laptop.

Problem is: most of the system KDE icons are not displayed. I don't think it's an issue with the icon files, because sometimes they are displayed (eg the "konsole" icon is currently correctly displayed on the "Recent Application" menu (meaning that the icon file is not missing), but not displayed in the "Tools -> Konsole" menu. Other example: AFAIR, I have already seen the firefox icon displayed on the taskbar too)

Notes:
- If of any interest, this laptop had a Mageia 1 in the past, and no issue with the icons.
- As far as I remember, the issue was not present when I initially installed mga8 on my laptop (I am not 100% sure, it was 1 year ago). I am sure that the issue was already here before I did update my system a few days ago though.
- Except the issue with the icons, the system is stable, never hangs, and has no other problems.

Any idea of what could be wrong?
Please tell me what could I check? Any lib I could reinstall maybe (and how)?

Below are 2 screenshots of the problem. On the first screenshot, most (but not all) of the icons are missing on the menu. On the second screenshot, I have just created a brand new user account, and the issue is the same: Dolphin has no icons (but image preview is working), and look at the taskbar: Firefox icon (under the mouse pointer) is also missing.

Hi

Do you have a "Live Plasma" to see if the issue is an update issue or an original release issue?

please output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v

and
Code: Select all
lscpu

TIA

If I find an USB key, I could give a try (not at home currently), but there is no 32 bits live with plasma, so I am not sure it's of any interest? Can I easily "urpmi dolphin" on 32 bits live Xfce for example?

If of any interest, this is the output when I look for "system-file-manager" file, which is the icon for "Dolphin" I think.
I don't know which file is used for KDE menu in this list (if any?), but it is not displayed into the menu anyway.

FWIW, for find you can use the option "-ls" instead of "-exec ls -lh \{\} \;" and you also don't need to quote the braces, {} would be fine.

If you create a new user and login as that user, does this issue also occur there?

Ok! :)

Yes, the issue is exactly the same, see my initial post: On the second screenshot, I have just created a brand new user account, and the issue is the same: Dolphin has no icons (but image preview is working), and look at the taskbar: Firefox icon (under the mouse pointer) is also missing

seems you only have a 32bit processor

it may be that the video driver, while it is the correct one, may be suspect.

can you try a different video driver e.g. Xorg / vesa or Xorg / intel?

Hi xi, reading this, I'm assuming you are using 32bit classic - This would be a 4.1GB iso. Does your downloaded file-size look right at about 4.1GB, and does the checksum match? This caught me before, and it's easy to miss.

it may be that the video driver, while it is the correct one, may be suspect.

can you try a different video driver e.g. Xorg / vesa or Xorg / intel?

I don't think this would be related. This looks more like missing icons, or possibly looking in a wrong directory, vs driver problem....but still worth a check....or as the saying goes...."leave no stone unturned" :-)

Out of curiosity, is this a fresh install, or an upgrade?
If it's a fresh install, I'm thinking the iso might be corrupted.
If it's an upgrade, then which version did you upgrade from? (there are a lot of changes from Mageia1->Mageia8).

If I find an USB key, I could give a try (not at home currently), but there is no 32 bits live with plasma, so I am not sure it's of any interest? Can I easily "urpmi dolphin" on 32 bits live Xfce for example?

If you installed from classic ISO, you can also add additional desktops, switching to the XFCE desktop might be helpful for debugging, and some KDE programs will run on it too - example Kwrite.

yes-ish. you may need to mount/enable any swap space you have on your HDD, as you are limited to a Live FS of <4GB of ram.
I erroneously thought you has installed 64 bit plasma system, which is why suggested plasma live.

anyway, from your screen shot, the cascade menu is missing the mozilla thunderbird icon, yet it is displayed on the desktop behind, so I suspect that the icons are all in the correct directory. you can check though.
Code: Select all
/usr/share/icons/
and here
Code: Select all
user/.local/share/plasma_icons/
its a hidden file!

Thanks for all your answers. Here is what I did since yesterday:

  • Tested the computer memory with memtest: memory is 100% OK
  • I have tried with "vesa" video driver instead of "intel": problem is exactly the same.
  • I have tested to switch to XFCE or LXDE and then launching eg dolphin: the issue is exactly the same, ie dolphin has no icons. All the XFCE and LXDE menu & desktop icons are displayed correctly otherwise.
  • Tried 32 bits live Mageia 8 with Xfce, installed dolphin: all the icons are displayed normally, see screenshot below (note, if of any interest: rpmdrake forced me to install a new glibc & other mandatory packages before I could install dolphin. I didn't reboot after this new glibc installation, otherwise I would have lost the glibc package update, and I would not have been able to install dolphin).
  • Note that when I create a brand new user account, the default font used for "konsole" is not a monospace font, but a variable space font! This could indicate that the plasma default files skeleton is corrupted, no? Which package contains these plasma skeleton files (if any)?
  • Even stranger: the same icon can be displayed at one place into the cascade menu, but not at another place. Take a look at my 2nd screenshot below, the "konsole" icon is displayed into the "Recent Application" menu entry, but not into the "Tools" menu entry.

To answer other questions:
Yes I used the 32 bits 4.1GB ISO to install my system. It was in may 2021 in fact ; I don't have the ISO anymore, so I can't check if it's correct or not. But I am quite sure there were the icons on my initial installation, I think I would have noticed otherwise.

I use this laptop only when I am travelling. I believe that one day I have powered on my laptop, and the icons had disappeared, and I don't think it's the consequence of an update (at least it's not the consequence of a recent update: I have updated many packages recently because I couldn't access my android phone, but I am 100% sure that the icon issue was already there for a long time before this update. Previous update on this laptop was maybe in june (?)).

I have installed Mageia 8 on a new SSD (so it's a fresh install), then copied some files from my Mageia 1 HDD into my home account. As I said, any brand new user account has the issue (even root account has the issue), so it's definitely not related to a permission or account problem. It could be a corrupted KDE lib or maybe corrupted plasma skeleton file? How can I force re-installation of whole plasma packages?

benmc wrote:anyway, from your screen shot, the cascade menu is missing the mozilla thunderbird icon, yet it is displayed on the desktop behind, so I suspect that the icons are all in the correct directory. you can check though.
Code: Select all
/usr/share/icons/
and here
Code: Select all
user/.local/share/plasma_icons/
its a hidden file!

Not sure to understand what you want me to check, but here are some commands for thunderbird & firefox. Note that into "user/.local/share/plasma_icons/firefox.desktop", the icon line is "Icon=firefox":
Code: Select all

You can try to delete/rename ~/.cache/icon-cache.kcache file and change icontheme in systemsettings afterwards. Try Adwaita, Breeze, Oxygen.

I believe that one day I have powered on my laptop, and the icons had disappeared

Based on the age of your laptop, you might be seeing decay on your harddrive, this is more true with laptops, since spinning disks don't like being bumped, and laptops are often tapped by fingers, bumped by knees and elbows.
SSDs are imune to bumps, but they also have lifetimes too - if you choose one, look for longest lives as an important attribute.

Mageia comes with S.M.A.R.T. smartmontools so it might be worth installing it to see how healthy your harddrive is. What could be happening is you see occassional losses, which then become more and more frequent before the harddrive eventually gives-up. There are several articles about this sort of thing, example https://www.grc.com/sr/smart.htm or https://www.techrepublic.com/blog/linux ... rd-drives/

This is the home page: https://www.smartmontools.org/ but since Mageia has an installable utility, start with that.

The other thing you may want to look at is is doing a file check. Under ext2, these checks were rather automatic after maybe a dozen bootups, but less frequently with ext4. It may be worth running e2sfck - the only way to do this well, is to boot a live distro and then run a command line, example:
Code: Select all
[me@genesis ~]$ su
Password: 12345
[root@genesis me]# fdisk -l  <-to figure-out your harddrive name, let's say it's /dev/sda
[root@genesis me]# e2fsck --help
[root@genesis me]# e2fsck /dev/sda1
[root@genesis me]# e2fsck /dev/sda2
[root@genesis me]# e2fsck /dev/sda3 ....etc depending on what was listed in "fdisk -l"
[root@genesis ze]# exit
exit
[ze@genesis ~]$

In terms of the snapshot you show with the konsole icon, that menu list should be full of icons, the majority of "shared" icons are stored in /usr/share/icons
If you "build" a program yourself, the icons tend to be found in /usr/local/share/icons
Older icons tend to be *.xpm and newer icons tend to be *.png, and fancy ones are *.svg
This shows you an example makefile used for installing these types of files (Distro installs follow a different/similar method):
https://github.com/JoesCat/xball/blob/m ... akefile.am
I am unfamiliar with a local cache for user icons. However, when you create a new user, it should be populating all the icons from the /usr/share/icons directory (distro provided), or from the /usr/local/share/icon directory for user-built programs.

Given all the previous tests, it's now quite clear that the issue is not related to a specific user, so anything involving any ~/ account is a no-go. (And I also tried to use other themes on a brand new user account with empty .cache directory, with no success either).

I am now quite sure that something is broken "system wide", so yes, defect HDD or corrupted partition could be a good catch. However, my HDD is in fact a brand new SSD now, but still, it could have failed.

So I have just done some tests on it:
  1. SMART output is fine I think. Every time I saw a failing HDD, it had "Read_Error_Retry_Rate" >> 0, but here it's 0, so I think everything is fine here
    Code: Select all

  2. e2fsck
I just found another technique to check the filesystem:
"touch /forcefsck" (as root obviously), and it forces a FSCK at next reboot.
Everything is fine here too (I only have one partition : /dev/sda1 + swap).
    .
  3. I have also opened and checked all the icons files for thunderbird in /usr/share/icons directory: all of them can be displayed ok, so, the icon files are not corrupted here.

So what's left? As already said, I am now quite sure that a KDE lib, or a skeleton file is/are corrupted on my system.
So please someone tell me how to reinstall all the KDE / plasma files without reinstalling the whole system.

I tried that:
"urpmi --replacepkgs task-plasma5"
but with no success, because "task-plasma5" is a fake package that does nothing.

How can I get the list of packages installed by task-plasma5?

No need for yelling. You have really outdated iconsets installed: nuoeveXT2. The last update was in 2007 so it won't fit to any modern desktop anymore. This package is not even available anymore via the official systemsettings download dialoge. How did you even install this? Really hard to believe that this is a clean Mageia 8 installation. Remove that icon set via the way you have installed it (you should know). Clean your system from the debris of this icon set. After that you can go into MCC, set the filter to "installed" and search for "icon". Note down the installed icon-packages.

Overgive the packages to the console and reinstall them:
Code: Select all
urpmi --replacepkgs --replacefiles package1 package2 package3

Theme currently in use is breeze. Thanks, I have reinstalled breeze icons with your command: "urpmi --replacepkgs --replacefiles breeze-icons". No changes, problem not solved.
I have also reinstalled all the other themes icons with no success either.

I highly doubt the issue is related to a problem with the icons anyway: as I said, I have opened icon files one by one and they are ok.
Moreover, remember that icons that are inside the applications (eg dolphin, systemsettings5, ...) are not displayed either, and I really don't think that internal application's icons are stored in /usr/share/icons directory, no? If not, the problem is definitely not in my /usr/share/icons directory.

Most probable cause for me is: the QT / KDE libs which is in charge of displaying icons is broken on my system. Problem is: I don't know what libs are involved here, hence my insistence to get some help on this matter.

As for the "nuoeveXT2", I didn't do anything special, it is provided with LXDE of mageia 8:
Code: Select all
rpm -q --whatprovides /usr/share/icons/nuoveXT2/48x48/apps/system-file-manager.png
lxde-icon-theme-0.5.1-4.mga8

Sorry to yell, I am glad to get some help, but I am repeating many times each thing... The problem has been narrowed down now: I may be wrong in my investigations, but given all the tests, I am quite confident it's not a hardware problem, nor a user account problem and I would really like to get some help on how to reinstall part of the system, because I don't know how to do that and I really think the issue is here.

take a full system image (/, /home) as the following is quite distructive, and golden rule: safety first!

at login, choose another deskop, then login, or choose a tty and login as root

as root:
Code: Select all
urpme --auto-orphans

please read here => viewtopic.php?f=36&t=3838
you should have a clean system.
Code: Select all
urpme task-plasma5 task-plasma5-minimal

this will remove the 2 meta packages, and result in a large orphans list.
Code: Select all
urpme --auto-orphans

this will remove all those orphans, again see viewtopic.php?f=36&t=3838.
reboot to remove any residual files in active memory.
login (tty or GUI) and as root.
Code: Select all
urpmi task-plasma5 task-plasma5-minimal

this will reinstall all plasma5 related files.
reboot and login to plasma desktop. check icons.

I have to agree - you are likely missing more than just icons, and it would be easier and less effort to simply backup your /home and then clonezilla the entire drive as a precaution. Re-install mageia8 fresh, then selectively copy your backed-up /home. Create a new clonezilla image and in a week or two, toss-out the older clonezilla as defective.

Reading the smartmon information had a few items pop-out as important.
Code: Select all
  9 Power_On_Hours          0x0032   100   100   000    Old_age   Always       -       422
 12 Power_Cycle_Count       0x0032   100   100   000    Old_age   Always       -       94

 174 Unexpect_Power_Loss_Ct  0x0032   100   100   000    Old_age   Always       -       9

 180 Unused_Reserve_NAND_Blk 0x0033   100   100   000    Pre-fail  Always       -       20

Based on this you've power cycled the laptop 94 times, with approx 5 hours a session since you got the new SSD, but within that time you have had 9 power losses. This value should be zero. There is something loose or saying good-bye with your laptop.

You can inspect the battery connection or the SSD connections to see if there is anything loose. You may have to use a nice solid table and possibly an external keyboard to avoid "tapping" anything that's loose. If your laptop runs hot enough that you can boil an egg using the exhaust port, you may consider investing in some rubber feet to give your laptop an additional 0.5cm clearance above a desk, to allow for more air intake if it sucks air from the bottom. You might have lint buildup in the airways if it has been sitting on laps. Due to age, and if heat is an issue, your laptop may be already be running into "fatigue":
https://www.google.com/search?client=fi ... der+joints

The other value " 180 Unused_Reserve_NAND_Blk 0x0033" says the SSD is already in pre-fail mode. This might be due to the unexpected power losses, or simply due to how the SSD was used.
My suggestion is when you reload a fresh Mageia8, use seperate partitions for / /home and swap, and to use ext2 for / and /home
SSDs are great for reads, but they wear-out due to writes. ext4 is journalled, while ext2 is not, so you might save a little more life with ext2.

Please don't recommend nonsense like that, that is FUD.
wear-out was only an issue for the first generation of SSDs, and only on some models after heavy or wrong usage. I've used several generations of SSDs for several years, and always used journaling filesystems - zero issues.

I second doctor on that :)
Besides, if there are occasional poweroffs/crashes, journalled file system is really recommended!
