[SOLVED] Mageia 8 GNOME Live installation freezes after boot

Postby flink » Dec 13th, '21, 20:13

The screen is black after an installation started from the Mageia 8 GNOME Live DVD.

I have also added and installed the updates from the internet at the end of the installation process.
After the first restart the Mageia screen has been frozen. Aber the second restart it ends in the black screen.

Maybe you are hit by the problem that you didn't set a hostname to your machine. Whilst installation and setting up your network it is always recommended to set a hostname.

Howto set hostname whilst installation:

So I did a new install.
But it never offers me to add the network connection. The installation does everything automatically, downloads the RPM packages from the servers and finishes the installation.
I have missed the settings of the hostname. Where does it appear? :?:

There should be a summary screen (where you can adjust keybord, time, services, sound, network, and so on). There you should be able to adjust the network.

No, this does never show up.

I have started with the Mageia 8 GNOME Live DVD.
There I used the command line shell to set the hostname.

Code: Select all
hostnamectl set-hostname NEW_HOSTNAME

Then I started the installation on the harddrive.

After the installation I did the restart for the installation process.

It again ends up in a black screen+ with a cursor blinking.

Then I switched the screen to another instance login. And the hostname is now successfully changed during the installation. Then I could not change the login screen back to the former instance. After the restart the Mageia startup freezes after a while. But it is still possible to shut it down.

can you re-run the install, but instead of using the "install on disk" icon,

can you start the install from a terminal
Code: Select all
draklive-install

upon completion, export the terminal contents to a text file and attach.

Hello,
Also something that can be tried : remove ~/.Xauthority file, if it exists.
I don't what is its role, but saw some case where this trick succeeded.

I have now used the Mageia 8 Lfce Live DVD for the installation. This works without a black screen at the end of the restart process. :?

After the boot of Xfce I have upgraded to the latest Cauldron Mageia Development packages. Then I installed and activated the GNONE desktop manager.
After the reboot I have again the frozen Mageia screen.

I suggest you open a bug on this, so this can be handled better.

I have already opened a bug report on the same matter:

A boot with GDM always ends in a frozen screen at the moment when the GNOME display manager is started.
