Mageia 2, 3, 4, and 5

Postby Germ » Sep 28th, '21, 20:28

I've been searching the mirrors and the ISOs just go back to 7. I have a Mageia 1 desktop. I'm wanting to upgrade. I have a Mageia 6 install DVD. This computer is not networked.

Any chance of success? Thanks.

A fresh install is much more reliable than all intermediate steps.
I guess it have USB so you can install from a flash stick?
Any reason not to install Mageia 8? - is it a weak computer, try xfce.

I know a fresh install is better. Its just a pain to backup and migrate all my files.

Yes, it has 4 USB ports. And it is a fairly decent computer. 2GB ram and a 2Ghz processor. It will handle a Plasma install.

I guess you are correct. I will just bite the bullet and do a fresh install. Thank You.

Have a look at viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14247
Some mirrors still have the older ISO images.

If you are going the upgrade route it is recommended to have reliable internet connection and update repos added and active during install, else there more probably surface problems, and you should also perform full system update on each Mageia release before upgrading to the next...
Upgrading all Mageias from 1 to 8 will take *a lot* of patience and probably some fixing. There are some serious changes in some steps like Plasma, and folders for system binaries to name a couple along the way... Top that of with the desktop system and som programs do not cleanly transform settings between some upgrades.
You really must make a backup of your files in any case.
A good idea is to start making a Mageia Live USB you can boot on and easier fix things in case it fail to boot properly.
