[SOLVED] My conky disappeared and I don't know how to bring

Postby Linares » Jul 5th, '21, 09:18

Hello.

Two years ago I had a hard time getting, with almost zero knowledge about Linux, that the Conky application worked on my Mageia.

Every now and then, Conky would disappear from my Mageia desk. But I would enter the console, directly type "conky", and Conky would quickly return to my desk.

Without having installed anything new, or modifying anything that I already have, this morning Conky disappeared from my desktop, but I can't get him back in the usual way.

What could have happened and how can I solve it?

Thanks.

It would be helpful if you could post the full output from the console when running conky.

Yes, the output is "bash: conky: order not found".
Previously, that did not happen.

Is that the actual output via copy & paste or is that translated ?

Can you please post the contents of your ~/.conkyrc ?

Are you sure it is still installed?

Did you try reinstalling the conky package?

It is a translation. The non-traslated is:

I'm not sure Conky is still installed. But I am completely sure that I have not uninstalled it.

I had a custom conky configuration that took me months to configure. If I reinstall Conky, won't I overwrite it?

No, application installation and the configuration in your home folder are separate from each other. The RPM installation by policy also has no access to your home folder.
But if you want to be extra safe, you can easily take a backup:

Code: Select all
cp -a ~/.conky ~/.conky-backup

And it seems like you would need to install conky again.

These two packages appear.

Should I install Conky, or Conky Manager?

Did you read the package description? You need at least conky and if you want a GUI for configuration you also need the conky-manager.

The truth is that I did not read it carefully because I have real difficulties with the language. In fact, I write this thanks to a translator, and I just googled to know the meaning of GUI, because until now I did not know.

I have installed Conky again, but the previous configuration that I had has disappeared. Now I have this mess:

Did you take a backup as recommended previously ?

No, because I did not know which files to save as backup. But I think that in this directory is half of my Conky configuration.

Code: Select all
drwxr-xr-x   2 root root  4096 jul 10 09:13 ./
drwxr-xr-x 124 root root 12288 jul 10 09:13 ../
-rw-r--r--   1 root root  2866 feb 23  2019 conky.conf
-rw-r--r--   1 root root  9100 ene 29  2020 conky.conf.actual.derecha
-rw-r--r--   1 root root  2863 dic 18  2019 conky.conf.backup0
-rw-r--r--   1 root root  3156 dic 18  2019 conky.conf.backup1
-rw-rw-r--   1 and  and  88036 dic 18  2019 conky.conf.backup1.png
-rw-r--r--   1 root root  9830 ene 29  2020 conky.conf.rpmsave
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root root   446 dic 19  2019 eltiempo.sh*

I carried it in two blocks, because it did not fit all in one. This is how it looked.

I posted the command that would have created a complete backup of your .conky folder ...

I found in /etc/conky/ the two files that load my Conky.

I loaded them like this:

conky -c /etc/conky/conky.conf.current.derecha

conky -c /etc/conky/conky.conf.rpmsave

In this way the two halves appeared again. And, without having to do anything in the startup settings, Conky appears back on my desktop every time I reboot my computer.

Solved. Thank you.

Make sure you make a copy of that file. It could get overwritten in the future.

You would preferably copy it to a more sensible location as opposed to using the .rpmsave file directly.
