Plasma: no GUI login for normal users

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

Plasma: no GUI login for normal users

Postby magfan » May 18th, '21, 13:06

On my local system only root can login into Plasma via GUI (using sddm). For all other users the login hangs after the progress bar finished about 2/3. But all users can login into Plasma from a vncclient connected to a vncserver running on my local system. What can be the reason for this?

Does that issue also occur for newly created users ? And would be helpful if you could add some journal log excerpts from the time where you begin sddm login until the hang.
Also, how long did you wait where the hang occurs ?

No, it does not occur for newly created users.

Today I tried to login twice:

10:26:05 -> attempt to login (plasma)
10:26:36 -> attempt to login (xfce)

Code: Select all
# journalctl --since today | grep sddm

Well, then you need to check what's blocking login in the settings of the existing users. As you filtered only for sddm journal lines, not much to see here

The hang should show somewhere between here

According to the log excerpt, 5 seconds after the plasma session starts, there's mrtdb-import.service which starts, I don't know where that comes from, but that's not part of a default installation.
20 seconds later, seems you killed the plasma session during startup by restarting X server or sddm. 20 seconds is not that much, and I don't see any obvious issues, where it would hang - maybe let it sit there for a few minutes to see what happens ?

Apart from that, out of curiosity, did you set a proper hostname for that box ? Can you please show the content of /etc/hostname ?

Code: Select all

I am working at a hospital and in my department all Linux workstations are named after brain structures. All workstations could be upgraded to mga8 - except for “cortex”. Unfortunately, this system now has several problems.

Code: Select all
cat /etc/hostname
cortex

The mrtdb-import.service / mrtdb-import.timer pair should not interfere with the login. It simply scans one directory every five minutes for newly arrived MRI images to import them into a database.

I assume it has to do with plasma, not with sddm. Without changing the display manager I can login into an xfce session.

Waiting for more than 10 minutes was not possible today. But when I switched after waiting to a console and back (Ctrl+Alt+4, Ctrl+Alt+1) just a vivid mouse cursor survived on a black screen.

Well, can't really tell from the log alone at what point it's hanging and why. You might have to check via lsof / ps auxwww or maybe some top equivalent on what happens at the time where the system does not login further.
10 minutes are definitely a bit too much, I just wondered if there's something that might take longer then say 30 seconds during login, so maybe wait a minute or something in that magnitude.

You could also try to switch to a different login manager, e.g. lightdm or gdm to see if that makes a difference for the plasma session.
