[solved] question about reboots for updates

Postby Spinnifex » Apr 13th, '21, 16:52

If the update program tell me to reboot because of updates what can
go wrong not rebooting?

Last week I update my system and I only have the gnu c compiler to update.
After this I get the hint.

Nevertheless after not rebooting there spwan a lot of new updates.
So I had no patient to reboot first.

What can go wrong?
For me as a software developer I can imagine what may be go wrong.

For me as a unexperienced user It would be better to get no new updates as long
as I reboot.

If you don't reboot then you're still running vulnerable software which still contains bugs / security issues etc.
So you might as well not install the updates at all - I don't really get your question.

And for gcc alone you don't get a reboot. This only happens for kernel, glibc, dbus and systemd from what I remember.

Hello

Sometimes like lastly there will be only one
update option when updating via MCC.
In this case
Code: Select all
gcc

After this the system said that I should reboot.
But because of the immediately refresh a large list of new updates
spawn. So I have the choice to install them too or to reboot.

Thanks for your answer. :!:

Yes it is confusing.
It first updates packages that may be involved in the install process, then restarts updater to present the rest of updates.
I usually let it install the rest too before rebooting.
