[solved]No Signal on Motherboard HDMI

Postby rymnd » Mar 27th, '21, 15:43

I recently installed Mageia 8 on my new computer, but I am experiencing display problems after launching from GRUB. The motherboard(ASUS Prime Z590-P with an Intel i5-10600K) is able to post and GRUB is a able display but after that the signal stops. I am using Intel's integrated graphics UHD 630 and the monitor is attached via HDMI. I have tried using GNOME, Plasma, and a no X install but all fail to display, and I also tried using Mageia 7 and Cauldron.

I can reach a tty screen if I pass the kernel the nomodeset option, and I can login through ssh. I can even login blind to a tty console when booting normally.

I have looked around and found on askubuntu two recent questions but there has not been much activity on them. Also on gitlab someone opened a bug report in the drm i915 section with what appears to be a similar problem but there has not been much of a response.

When I looked at the dmesg output I can see that there is an error right after the switch from EFI VGA to inteldrmfb.

Thank you,
R

Dumb question, you don't have any discrete graphics card installed, just to make sure? But regardless, <ou may want to switch back and forth the setting regarding integrated or discrete graphics, check https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1032010/
I do remember other mainboards that had issues when this was set to automatic, it needed to be set to integrated (or discrete, respectively).

Does that mean the monitor actually turns off?

Would be helpful if you could post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and possibly any config below /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and also the log /var/log/Xorg.0.log

As this does seem to be reproducible and sounds a lot like https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/1995 you should probably report this as a bug, if we don't find an easy solution/workaround.

I do not have a discrete graphics card since the current price of graphics cards are little steep for me.

The monitor will display 'no signal'. It will turn off eventually but that is just its standard power saving when inactive.

I set the bios to cpu graphics but it still has the same problem and the same when flipped to pcie. There is a beta bios version for my board at ASUS maybe I should try that.

This is the bug report that I found: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/3286.

What you could try is to simply move away / rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf to let X manage the detection automatically. Does that help in any way ?

Unfortunately that did not fix the problem. I think the problem is related to the i915 module in the kernel or something related to it. I had tried to install mageia without X and still had the same problem. I am able to get output if I use 'nomodeset' or 'i915.modeset=0' but Gnome will not display a login screen but I can get to a tty login.

Resolved by installing the drm-tip kernel.

It is kernel 5.12.0-rc5+ but with the latest drm development.

This was the source: https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm-tip/
