After many years (more than 15) using flickr, I decided to switch to google photos, mainly because I'm not a pro photographer and it appears to be the most affordable and reliable service to host a backup of my photos (yes I considered self-hosting but not really checking the box for "reliable").
However, downloading your photos from these online services may be a pain in the ** and hopefully, I've found https://flickrdownloadr.com/. It works perfectly under Mageia but you will need to follow these instructions:
- Download the latest 64 bit linux binary release on the website (3.3.4.1 (beta) at the time of writing, I didn't try the RPM but it doesn't appear to be for mageia)
- Install the package "mono-basic", available in the standard repos of Mageia (4.7-2.mga7 at the time of writing) and let Mageia select necessary dependencies
- As root, run the tool named "cert-sync" : as written in the mono FAQ, it will import your current trusted certificates into the list of mono's trusted certificate because, by default, mono doesn't trust any SSL certificate.
Then the software should work as expected and you should be able to download entire albums locally. Uploading to google photos is quite simple but I recommend going through google drive (which lets you upload complete folders) before you transfer these folders to google photo, to avoid transferring photos one by one. Be careful though, that google photos import dialog will only list the first 50 photos of your google drive: you first need to scroll all the way down and hit "Ctrl+A" to select all the photos in your drive folder.
Do not hesitate to PM me if you have any difficulty making it work!
