Hello,
With the latest updates VLC has stopped working for me, when it plays video files (audio files works ok)

With this version of Kernel and packages it works perfectly
Code: Select all

However, with the updated version of Kernel and packages as soon as you try to play a video, the program closes unexpectedly.

The same thing happens to someone or do you know if there is a bug reported in this regard? I have not seen anything in the forum and I have doubts that it is something particular mine.

Thanks.

The newer version works fine here, although I'm using the proprietary driver, and I'm also not using a wayland session.

You may want to try to logout and at login screen select a session without wayland, e.g. GNOME classic.

for me on the i586 kernel, there is no problem, (intel graphics)

how-ever with the x86_64 kernel, there are some "issues" (intel graphics)
I have 2 x .mp4 files, one plays without issues by selecting vlc as the player from the mouse tooltip menu.
the other, vlc exits silently.
so, there may be encoding issue with your file that it will not play.
it I start vlc from terminal, then from the VLC menu => media => open file, then it works ok.

if you run from terminal
Code: Select all
$ vlc /path/to/file/file.???/code](mp4, mkv....etc) does it play?

likely a bug report to be created,
please post the link to the bug for others whom may have the same issue.

Looks similar to an issue I had a few days ago on an old laptop. VLC segfaulted using OpenGL. Changing the video output method (in preferences) got it working well enough for purpose so never thought any more about it.

Hello Benmc,

The problem persists even if vlc is run from a terminal. It only happens with video files (mpeg, mp4, avi), even with m3u lists for TV channels. It has to be something of the new version of VLC because until recently it worked correctly as indicated in my previous post. I'm going to open a bug about it to see if they can solve the problem.

As you say, this has happened recently, since the last updates, so that package will have to be reviewed. Thanks.
