If you install the htop package and then open a terminal and type htop you will be able to see which processes are consuming your memory and CPU cycles.
Possible causes of slowdowns are :-
Insufficient memory leading to high use of swap.
No swap partition AND insufficient memory
Processor too slow for KDE4 - (Disabling nepomuk will free up a lot of CPU power)
Processes running using lots of CPU, msec and draksnapshot for example.

Do not be alarmed if htop shows that your memory is fully utilised. Linux uses spare memory as a disc cache. It is normal to show high usage.
Clearing the cache should be unnecessary.
If your problem persists post details of your system.

BTW: The cache is actually there to make it faster, and does not slow it down.

Here Firefox stays opened up for weeks, one time even for over a month, and it does not get slower.
