Hi,
From the latest upgrade I cannot boot. I am now using
- Code: Select all
uname -a
Linux localhost 5.1.14-desktop586-1.mga7 #1 SMP Sat Jun 22 10:29:41 UTC 2019 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
The previous upgrade would not boot but I thought the problem would be resolved in the next upgrade.
Laptop is old toshiba with 2 gig ram.
Thanks.

5.1.14 is far from the latest upgrade, it was the kernel that Mageia 7 released with initially.
Would you also mind to share some more specific information, like about the hardware in that old laptop.
Or how far it actually boots, does it load the bootloader, does it try to load the initrd, does it load the actual installed system, and how far and what is the last message you see.
Also, did you try to simply reinstall the latest kernel, maybe you simply had a bad download.

Could help you with the command but you didn't share what kernels you currently have installed
- Code: Select all
rpm -qa|grep kernel|sort
Also, which is the most recent kernel that still boots and which is the first one that doesn't boot anymore ?

Removed splash quiet and successful boot. With splash quiet in place no boot. If I have to make that change permanent that would be no problem. How do I do it.
- Code: Select all
uname -a

Made the above change using the Mageia control panel in the Boot section.. Should I mark this solved?

good question.
not really a fix, as you will likely need to redo for every kernel update, so make a note to self.
better to mark as a [work-around], so that at least anyone else with the issue can find a temporary fix to get them going.

The booting process stopped after logging in. This suggested to me that some plasma file had got corrupted. So I removed all plasma related files and began again. This did not help. So I made a new installation. Linux Mint this time, because that was the only system I had got on a USB stick. Later I remembered that Mageia starts up with the option of a recovery mode. (Never used this in all sixteen years of using Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia.) I started up with the kernel before the newest. Everything worked flawalessly as ever. So I removed the latest kernel and "kernel-latest". No problem at all.
I hope this information is useful to those who understand the workings of the Mageia Kernel.
Greetings
Erik

Sounds similar. Next time you boot press the e key and when the text appears look for splash quiet. Remove that text and press cntrl x. Your system should boot. Let me know. Thanks.

In order to do this experiment I reinstalled kernel 5.7.14 with kernel-latest. Immediately after this I go a kernel update tot 5.7.19. Both crashed after the login sound. The removal of "splash quiet" on booting did not help with each kernel. The only way to boot and login successfuly is to use a 5.6.x kernel.
Does this help you?
Greetings
Erik

That's not the same problem at all. Please create a separate thread for your issue.
