Mageia on GPD Win Max, can it?

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

Currently:
Note: reverted back to basic kernel perameters because the previous kernel didn't have everything enabled. Will try now minus rotate:1 but have altered nothing else. xorg.conf for example.

Now from the line below it seems not accepting the edid. I do not know clearly,

Code: Select all
zgrep -i edid /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE=y
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_EDID=y

Re: Mageia on GPD Win Max, can it?

Postby Sabungayam » Sep 13th, '20, 10:45

I have an odd question... this question is:

IN other distros I tested, just to see what is going on earlier. the command you gave me, fbcon=rotate:1, I can't remember 1 where if I just stuck it in grub with a quick edit, it rotated. It everything else wasn't right but it at least rotated to the right.

Why is this basic thing not working in Mageia? Neither in live or installed. Went back and tried a few lives? So it seems that parameters are really NOT being honored in when they should be passed to the kernel?

Can anyone else try with some lives and observe this? Unless it is only with this weird hardware. But with this hardware it works with other distros. None I would use and most don't even make it to X like Mageia here.

From what I can tell, only CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER needs to be either enabled or configured as a module, and CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE needs to be enabled.

But it does not seem to do anything from your logs, but it could also be that this is because you're running a wayland session. I can only suggest to try with a legacy X session, not using wayland as already suggested before several times.

Can you post the ouput of
Code: Select all
zgrep -i -e edid -e drm /proc/config.gz

and also /var/log/Xorg.0.log after your modifications?

Both... I can send the logs from Xfce but I think I did that the first time. But then I didn't have everything enabled. :oops:

I can do it later when I am back home and can open up that unit.

Either way the result is the same. Sometimes I end up in KDE Wayland because:

1. xrandr rotate killed X plasma. All I get is a cursor and black screen and seem unable to bring it back. (any suggestions? Isn't there something like deleting user settings that will revert it to default)

2. Sometimes aside from already taking as long as 3 min or more to show up, Xfce X session does not show up after login. So I end up resetting X and going to Plasma Wayland.

I actually finished in Xfce yesterday but it seems like I had to go into Plasma Wayland then logout and come back to Xfce. Xfce just didn't start at first.

I recompiled because an update dropped in a new kernel. 5.8.9. So I set it up because redoing 5.8.8 for some reason wifi was starting quite late and the applet was never showing when it was online.
Of course in Wayland, I can't open MCC. So mostly I try to work in Xfce if I can get it open.

I would like to do a FRESH install with just Xfce.

Can you tell me how I can get an RPM from this kernel as that doesn't work.

Is there a different set of commands or something I need to download to get it to make an RPM?

If XFCE does not show up after 3 minutes or more, you should better check the logs to find out why. A simple reinstallation will usually not fix anything. You can easily test if it's an issue with your user configuration by simply creating a new user and loggin in as that user.

Also I don't think you mentioned at all that xrandr rotate crashes your X session, or that XFCE does not start at all.

And no, I can't tell you how to create an rpm from your self-compiled kernel. I've not done this in ages myself because I didn't need to.
And as you mentioned that you needed to recompile due to 5.8.9 what would that achieve if you would have to redo it for each kernel update?

My reason for trying the new kernel.

I mentioned about xrandr because something had been mentioned about it on the page with this custom edid. That using it to rotate breaks the vsync. I said earlier here that it had indeed broken
plasma. So I installed Plasma Wayland. Pretty far back. No time to find it now on my way out.

xfce was pretty slow, to start and I presumed because of this screen issue. But lately after the recompile it has gotten to this state of taking longer to start or not starting at all.

using 5.8.9 has my wifi starting back normally as well as the applet registering changes properly. I apologize as I didn't have time to get on that computer yesterday for the logs. Hopefully today.

Which log should I check for the xfce issue?

As with everything else, journal logs. journalctl -ab and then check for events during/after the time when XFCE was started.

In Xfce... I had to reset X and login a 2nd time for it to start fully vs just hanging with a cursor on a black screen

This is what I can find, I do not know if it's limited because I can only use the GUI here with the screen issue.

I was looking at what you wrote: CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER needs to be enabled or as a module,

The thing is... it is not appearing here in the list.

https://www.kernelconfig.io/CONFIG_DRM_ ... ion=3.17.8

says it should be at:
Linux Kernel Configuration
└─> Device Drivers
└─> Graphics support
└─> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
└─> DRM_KMS_HELPER

https://www.kernelconfig.io/CONFIG_DRM_ ... ion=3.17.8

says it's called by this and this is here:

Linux Kernel Configuration
└─> Device Drivers
└─> Graphics support
└─> DRM_KMS_FB_HELPER

attached images indicate what I found there and enabled.

Are these missing or hidden because they should be on already? The 1st one is said not to be configurable in the link, CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER

NOTE: It doesn't seem to honor my spacing with the arrows.

connected to 1920x1080 projector via HDMI. Expanded the terminal window.

Tried: make menuconfig

to see if I could get the ncurses menu.

Code: Select all
make[1]: *** [scripts/kconfig/Makefile:29: menuconfig] Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Hello, did the logs or anything else here help in understanding what is taking place here and why the custom edid is not being used?

Is there another thing to be tried or should a possible bug report be filed for something unavailable?

The kernelconfig link your asked about is for kernel 3.x which is pretty old information, we're at kernel 5.x now.
You can also read that during kernel configuration. If make menuconfig does not work for you, check if you have ncurses-devel packages installed.
Otherwise try with "make nconfig" or "make xconfig" for a Qt-based frontend or "make gconfig" for a GTK-based config frontend - although you might need to install some packages for that.

What you need enabled is CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE and CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER enabled or as a module, as already mentioned.
I can't comment on if any other kernel patch is necessary, maybe some DRM or intel driver-specific patches, you would need to figure that out yourself if you want to get your hardware working.

In any case, current EDID override does not seem to be used at all. What you could try is replace this

drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=eDP1:edid/gpdwinmax.bin

with this, which seems to be the current way since kernel >=4.15.0 - Also as already mentioned, I'd leave out the output so remove the eDP1: part for now. You can add it later once it's working at all.

drm.edid_firmware=edid/gpdwinmax.bin

or additionally with video= like so:

video=eDP1:800x1200@60 drm.edid_firmware=edid/gpdwinmax.bin

Note that the name of the output is different then what xrandr shows. The name of the kernel output devices can be seen via e.g. ll /sys/class/drm/card*-*

Also the EDID file might be only read below /lib/firmware/edid and not under /usr/lib/firmware/edid/ so please check your /etc/dracut.conf.d/99-edid.conf again.
As your lsinitrd output lists the EDID file as usr/lib/firmware/edid/gpdwinmax.bin and not lib/firmware/edid/gpdwinmax.bin as expected.

I've found some example log output and when custom EDID is actually used, this is what it should look like in journalctl

I will post those... outputs as soon as possible.

I showed in the image what is available to be enabled and I enable it. I am using the xconfig and yes had to install something extra for that.

Previously I did show the original output from trying to rebuild the kernel the 1st time. It is here somewhere. It said then that my screen was too small. I can only at present use 800x600 screen which seems to be about half the screens size which is why I get 2 split screens.

I will have a check of the location of the firmware.bin file as you suggest. I typed the commands as you gave, in fact copy and pasted. As I recall they are in /lib/firmware/edid not /usr/lib/firmware/edid.

I will have a look at that closely.

the reason I sent the images as well as the link to the kernel org page, yes that is an old kernel but is there any reason you think the location should be other than described?

I sent a photo and the point was that in that photo of my use of the xconfig gui option...

I find no: CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER

Perhaps I am looking in the wrong location. Can you kindly tell me where it is?

I don't know what you're looking for on your screenshots. This is exactly in the place where the config says it should be:

-> Device Drivers
       -> Graphics support
         -> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support) (DRM [=m])
          -> Allow to specify an EDID data set instead of probing for it

The last one is not enabled in Mageia default kernel configuration and should be enabled.

This is an excerpt from search via ncurses config for kernel-5.7.19-desktop-1.mga7 :

Very good, then it's enabled as it should be, that was in my question with the images, but perhaps my wording was incorrect.

Sabungayam wrote:
Are these missing or hidden because they should be on already? The 1st one is said not to be configurable in the link, CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER

doktor5000 wrote:I don't know what you're looking for on your screenshots. This is exactly in the place where the config says it should be:

My mistake it wording, I thought I said clearly what I was looking for: CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER

But now that you have clarified it, then I am aware that I have enabled what needs to be enabled after all. I do not generally mess with the kernel. I do not have the high level of understanding that you do.

So my questions may seem ridiculous or redundant. But then I do not know so asking is the only way to find out. Even just because I search and READ something on some forum does not mean I understand it.

So the point of my images was a concern that CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER was not something I could find on the kernel config menu and that perhaps it was not fully enabled as you specified. As though I don't understand, some of the logs say things clearly like the edid isn't being used.

I have meetings today, I will see about getting you those command outputs when I can today.

Checked, see images.

There is this other folder but I didn't create it? Is this done automatically? :?:

Why did you add this also to GRUB_VIDEO ? That is not configured by default, please comment that whole line out with a #
You're also totally mixing things up. In GRUB_VIDEO you put video= with specifying an output, but you didn't put this in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT at all, why is that?
Also the output should be eDP-1 not eDP1, seems you also didn't read the note I posted about that.

Your GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT also seems wrong. Why do you have single quotes ' around the double quotes " around the options ? This is what it should look like:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet noiswmd resume=UUID=dfa7e552-30b5-4b65-97fc-214ae11b35d2 audit=0 drm.edid_firmware=edid/gpdwinmax.bin"
OR with video=
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet noiswmd resume=UUID=dfa7e552-30b5-4b65-97fc-214ae11b35d2 audit=0 video=eDP-1:800x1200 drm.edid_firmware=eDP-1:edid/gpdwinmax.bin"

Also please don't pos screenshots of text files, just post the actual content with cat. As otherwise it's very hard to tell if you maybe got linebreaks wrong or something like that.

I will fix those. I am copying and pasting. I didn't type or not type quotes. I just past what you put in between the lines now. So actually don't have any idea how to answer you question about that. That is to say why it's like that. Remember you asked me to let it reconfigure this with auto detect last time. I didn't do anything other than past between the quotes. I just pasted you line, and didn't add the eDP-1. Forgot.

uh, didn't understand and didn't know any better. It said video so I put it there.

Didn't realize it was meant for there.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet noiswmd resume=UUID=dfa7e552-30b5-4b65-97fc-214ae11b35d2 audit=0 drm.edid_firmware=edid/gpdwinmax.bin"
OR with video=
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet noiswmd resume=UUID=dfa7e552-30b5-4b65-97fc-214ae11b35d2 audit=0 video=eDP-1:800x1200 drm.edid_firmware=eDP-1:edid/gpdwinmax.bin"

I will fix these errors as soon as possible and post the results. When I am back on the unit.

I've never pasted the complete line, and I've also never used single quotes. And at first the line looked like this, from your post:

Code: Select all
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" splash quiet noiswmd resume=UUID=dfa7e552-30b5-4b65-97fc-214ae11b35d2 audit=0" drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=:edid/gpdwinmax.bin

You should pay attention to such details, it's pretty hard to spot that if you don't put the options as they are mentioned - that's definitely not copy&paste, if you even switch the ordering of the options later on.

I apologize if you think I am saying it came from you. That is not what I mean at all nor intend to imply.

Just really I have no answer as to why it's like that. Usually what you put here I just copy & paste that's all I mean but that doesn't mean I didn't fumble around & do something silly which I am sure I did.
