[CLOSED] Slow and limited swap and ram

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

[CLOSED] Slow and limited swap and ram

Postby javierpc » Jun 17th, '20, 00:04

Hello.
My system dont use all ram, only use 3.5 gb ram (of 5.3)
Then use maximum 1.3 gb swap very slow (mouse pointer freezes)
Then, if I open a new firefox tab the system freeze for minutes, sometimes crash and no response any more (but hard disk dont stop activity).

Screenshot show the limits of ram and swap.
memoria.png
memoria.png (267.87 KiB) Viewed 1940 times

The first middle the system was "overloaded" (with 50% free ram and 85% free swap) and desktop not response for minutes. When I closed a program this stabilished.

It has been instaled few weeks ago because an update gave me a lot of trouble with my broadcom device. But this feature (slow and limited swap and ram) was before.

I can hibertane (very very veeery slow) and this is the only way to use more of 1 gb swap.

I am playing with swappiness and friends but without success.

RAM: 6 GB (5.3 GB)
swap: 10 GB
Disk: HDD 500 GB.

Files system (all aligned to cilindres):
btrfs /
ext4 /home
swap and efi

/etc fstab
Code: Select all

# Entry for /dev/sda8 :

Grub:
Code: Select all

( vmlinuz-5.6.14-desktop-2.mga7 dont work broadcom device )

I dont know if is needed more details

Hi javierpc,

Yes, the mouse and keyboard will be very slow when you use SWAP. It will feel like having a Racecar slow from 200kmph down to walking speed. SWAP is there for when you really really need it due to something unexpectedly large, however, the less you use it, the better for you, and your harddrive. The less SWAP you use - the better.

I say you have the right size SWAP for the size of RAM you have (approx 2x RAM)..

using only 3.5GB RAM, and lots of SWAP. It sounds like you are running a 32bit kernel limited to 4GB.
There are other kernels that make more use of RAM - Check the Mageia Control Center in case you chose the wrong type.

Since you say the word "hibernate", I guess this is a laptop. Laptop RAM is measured a little differently, there is total RAM, but then you need to subtract RAM dedicated to the display(s), same for modern machines with no plug-in graphics card(s).
...however, 1GB+ seems a bit heavy for graphics.

However - the first thing I'd suggest is - verify you are not using defective RAM.
Reboot your install CD or DVD or USB, and in the choices given, I would recommend to run the RAM test. Run RAM/CPU tests for 24hrs to ensure you are not working with defective RAM (this can look ok initially, but may show problems when it warms up a bit). If the RAM test shows problems, then start with fixing this problem first.

FYI - Don't double-post.

Please.

5.3 gb > 4 gb ram
So The kernel is not 32 bits.

Desktops can hibernate too, this feaure is not only for laptops!.

ANY video on board (Desktops and mobiles) have the option to choice ram size on bios setup screen. Not only laptops.

I dont know why do you say something like that.

I will not lose my time checking the ram.

Thank you.

---------------------

Now, I am going to try again.

Ram: 6 gb - video onboard (and round) = 5.3 gb.
But only use 3.5... maximum 4 gb.
Swap size: 10 gb
But only use 1.3.

On that limit the system looks overloaded.
Screen freeze and sometimes crash and hard disk dont stop.

I dont know why the slow activity on swapping.
But I AM SURE the IRQ manager is not doing the job very well.
I uninstalled irqbalance but the system dont like that.
So I reinstalled it.

So.
I dont know why the ram and swap limit.
May be memory / swap manager or something in settings.

Sorry my english.

If your onboard video is reserving memory from your main memory, I think that means that memory will not be available to the rest of the system.

Try turning down the video memory allocation and see if that improves your situation.

No, no and no.
Thanks for try but...p lease read the post, look the screenshot.

I said and now I say again:
5.3 gb ram = 6 gb (rounded) - 256 mb (video)

if video use 1 gb ram, the total memory available will show 5 gb
if video use 2 gb ram, total memory = 4 gb,
if video use 3 gb ram, total memory = 3 gb
if video use 4 gb ram, total memory = 2 gb
if video use 9 gb swap, total swap = 1 gb
but video never will use 8.7 gb swap.
video never use swap.
Right?

People who dont know please dont lose the time answering this post, I dont want to lose my time explaining things like this.

This is not easy, so I published this on "advanced support" but some little angel move this to "basic suppont" and I dont know why.

Thanks for that.

So you just brushed over one experienced forum member, who might be able to help you with some insights, that he "doesn't know".
And the "little angel" who moved this to basic support was me. Because that is a really basic question.

Good luck getting support at all, with that attitude you're showing to others that try to help you.

If this is a so REALLY basic question where is the REALLY basic answer?
I can not see the answer. Where is the basic answer?

This is not for basic supporters, this is not an "how can install my webcam?".
This is not for newbies.
So my "attitude" is not for people who try to help. Right?

This is for advanced users.
I dont want newbies talking about on board video memory because I know that, I explained that.
I know video on board use memory, every body know (except the first one).

Now check this, I reduced the video memory.
Now ram is not 5.3 like before.

Come on.
I dont want explain this again.
But now somebody tell me how can solve this the limited swap and ram?

So please, people who dont know dont try to help me.
That is bad? I dont think
Tomorrow people who find this will enjoy a lot of nonsense (my attitude included) nothing about the solution.
Thanks for understad and sorry for this thread in basic support but this is not for basic supporters.

Do you want basic questions I have a lot of that, this is linux, nothing work fine in linux.
"Why dolphin show nothing on audio info columns (artist, album)?"
That is for basic support, check the video, check the hard disk, check the power button and everybody fun.

But this thread is not for basic support, I know that, people know that, everybody know that, and you, little angel, you know that too.

Are you getting any relevant messages in the log?

Have you checked the health of your hard drive? (There's a SMART tool in the repo) The fact that you specify 'very very slow' raises this question.

By default ksysguard doesn't show the memory used by cache or buffers so it can appear that the memory is half empty when in fact it's stuffed. Normally not much of an issue but sometimes it has real effects.
You can check memory usage more fully with 'free', for one example.

btw as a point of interest - a 32 bit kernel with PAE enabled can use more than 4GiB of RAM just fine.
I see my C has been in the sea too long - it's gone rusty.

Yes, ksysguard dont show many of things, for example cpu load, graphs show 90% of activity but process list show another story.

This computer have unfriendly hardware (like me) .

Debian dont like, I can not hear music because when connect wifi or bluetooth cuts the sound, whe copy files is the same.
Red hat, 8 gb installer and it can not detect the broadcom card.
Manjaro is nice, I used manjaro a few time, I can hear music and copy files in the same file system (not swap or external because sound cuts)

So with Mageia I can hear music connecting and disconnecting wifi and bluetooth and when copy files (or hard disk works) sound cuts is very very minimal,
May be is this something in irqbalance and /or DMA system.
But the real trouble is the limited memory, and I have not idea about this.
Yesterday I run in PHP
Code: Select all
while (true)
{ $x[] = ''; }

And system crash. not PHP, all system freeze.
That is because reached to the ram and swap "limit".

ok, so you have the 64 bit kernel, so you should be able to access all your ram, less shared with your video.

your video card is intel 810, needs no special drivers, so should not be taxing your CPU.

my system memory:
free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 1906 1502 69 141 334 119
Swap: 2279 147 2132

note: I have 11 Firefox tabs open.

can you post the output of
Code: Select all
$ top

and trim to the upmost 10 or so processes

Thanks for try.
I hope not find this very basic issue on new bugs next version.
This so very basic question is unsolved.
May be because is too much basic, not such "how can play with kid3?" wich is very advance.
This is the end of this thread.
