Some annoying things

Hi everybody!
I've been using Mageia in my old Notebook (Intel Centrino) for a while, in an evaluating effort (I've used Mandriva in it before, and I'm keeping using Mandriva in another one of my machines). It works well the most of times, but there are some behaviours I found particularly annoying: First, when I click on the shut-down bottom, the whole screen gets 'black' for almost 2 seconds and then the box with log-off/shut-down options appears. Once one option is selected, graphic mode goes and come, until it gets to the end (total shut-down, or login screen)... :|
Second: it seems to me that the system is taking too much time (more than 1 second!) before recognizing clicking on icons of the launch-bar, whenever I use an ordinary mouse or the touch-pad of my Note. I don't know if it is due to my configuration, or if it's due to other processes running in background that make KDE and the whole system lesser responsive... :(
Third: when I open Firefox, its window always opens using the half of screen size...That's weird (but I saw this only when opening Firefox during a session of main user, the 'virtual owner' of the Note -- my wife! When switching to other user, Firefox opens normally, already sizing its window to the whole available screen :?: )
In fact, I cannot say that such strange behaviours are exactly bugs (and they can be due to some misconfiguration of my old machine), but I think the system rather not 'behave' like that... Specially 'fading' screens during log-in/log-out processes give us the sensation that something is missing. Not to mention that slow responses to clicking in launch-icons is even worse! I my humble opinion, what actually makes the difference of a OS is its responsiveness and stability (and general safety, or course!)
Thanks in advance!

hello,
You didn't say much about your hardware. KDE 4 is very power consuming, I would say a 2,5 Ghz CPU with 2 Go RAM and a good graphic card driver. On my Athlon 3500+ with 2 Go RAM, I meet most of your problems (Mandriva 2010.2 32 bits). The same PC with Mageia 1 64 bits and Xfce is very speed. I use it to convert raw photos with RawTherapee and I never have to wait.
It is also very important to have the right driver. For example I saw simple actions to be delayed on a PC with a Phenom II X4, 4 Go RAM and a Radeon HD4350 because the driver wasn't the top one.

kde4 in an old centrino is always going to be sluggish. You can speed it up a bit by disabling desktop effects and disabling nepomuk.

As for opening Firefox in full screen that is easy to fix.
Right click on the firefox window var and select 'Configure Window Behaviour'
Navigate to WindowRules>Window settings for Firefox>Modify>Geometry

Indeed, I didn't describe enough my hardware, just because I oppened the thread at office, away from it.
It's quite possible that what is missing is a better set, including changing from KDE to Xfce (is it already available?...). Ok, I'll try to set the 'old boy' as per your suggests, thanks! :)
Regards to all!

You can have as many desktop environments installed as you please. To install XFCE all you have to do is open the software manager GUI in Mageia Control Centre, ensure the two drop down filters in the top left corner are both set to 'All' and install the package task-xfce
That will install the whole of xfce for you. At the log in window click on the 'paper' icon and you can switch between kde and xfce desktops.
You will find 'task-' meta packages for a number of other desktop managers if you want to try them out too.

Personally on my rather slow netbook I use LXDE.
